Its been too long since I've flown and I'm contemplating a long weekend trip to Perth from CBR to soak up the sun on a beach/resort-style stay.

The clincher is my partner works in aged care so can't afford to be located in a hotspot. By the look of things Perth is about as remote as it gets for the likelihood of potential hotspots but I guess after Christmas, who knows...

What do you think? Should I progress the argument with her to book the trip to Perth, or do you all think Perth is as likely as anywhere else to turn into lockdown city?

M

Definitely! I'm glad I took the chance to go just before Christmas... When my flight arrived in Perth, disembarkation is 50 at a time through the forward door only (for temperature screening and border clearance) so try to select seats up front.

Oh, please, correct the spelling of ‘definitely’ in your poll post. I try not to be too pedantic with spelling and grammar, but this is one where I cringe.

Otherwise I would have ticked ‘definitely’ for a trip to Perth. You won’t have to self-isolate on return to ACT from here.

Remember to fill out your G2G before departure from CBR to show border control on arrival.

P.S. Can you fly directly from CBR? Or via ADL? Otherwise it’s a no go.

Depends where you are coming from, but do consider that if you are coming from what could become a 'hotspot', you may find yourself either isolating, or needing to make a hasty retreat from the state.

I would not suggest anyone from outside WA look at tourism travel to WA at this points in time.

Sadly I tried to correct it just after saving it, I can’t edit the poll choices (except to add new ones) nor can I delete the poll. Erg! Are there any moderators that can assist??? I was happy to let my unfortunately typo go but it seems it too Much for some :)

Oddly, the flights to Perth are via Brisbane (which is in lockdown) and when last time my brother was there had unhealthy types just wandering into the airport even though the borders to Brisbane were closed. The once direct flights to Perth from CBR don’t seem to be a thing any more...

As @oz_mark has said, your biggest risk factor is not an outbreak here, but an outbreak in CBR or your transit city causing a border closure last minute and cancellation of your trip. The other risk is while here your home location (or somewhere you've been) is declared a hotspot by Chairman Mark and forcing you into immediate hotel quarantine while here.

I guess my advice would really be to leave booking your flight and hotel to the last minute. I certainly wouldn't be booking well in advance and hoping for the best.

Personally, I'm avoiding travel to WA at the moment because you risk getting caught out by retrospective quarantine rules or border closures if there is a new case in the state/territory you've travelled from even after you've already arrived in WA. This has already happened during the past month to people in WA who had recently arrived from NSW, VIC or QLD after there were new cases in those states.

With WA there is the risk of retrospective quarantine for any arrival from outside WA (but inside Australia) at the drop of a hat.

If I understand correctly poor regional NSW/Qld dragged in the net without a single case or exposure site.

From the arrival at WA perspective, the biggest risk would be ACT having an unexpected exposure site from Sydney travellers. It got quite close (ie Melbourne via Eden?)

For the return perspective, ACT is very unlikely to ask for quarantine/closed border unless something approaching a hotspot declared, but of course the new variant makes the new hotspot measure a bit unknown. It will get to Parliamentary sessions soon and in my observation that has been previously taken into account.

Nope from me - mainly on the arrival side lol

Indeed, people who had recently arrived in WA from Cairns (1,600km from Brisbane, and where there are no cases) have been forced into quarantine. These kind of rules border on being arbitrary and ridiculous (no pun intended).

Also, under the current rules you would need to make sure you don't visit Queanbeyan (or elsewhere in NSW) nor have any contact with someone from Queanbeyan for 14 days prior to flying from ACT to WA. Otherwise, you could be sent to quarantine and fined $1,000 like the ACT politician caught out this week.

Qantas still has QF856/7 direct, but you still risk finding yourself in quarantine if things go pear-shaped in the ACT, or if QF reroutes you through somewhere that is later blacklisted.

Some people we know flew over from Perth last month for their daughter's wedding in Canberra. They'd booked the direct flight over, but QF rerouted them via MEL. The retrospective border closure with Victoria the day after they returned meant that they had to self-isolate for a further 13 days, due to the one hour transit in MEL on the way over.
