Traveller, Tourist or Intrepid Explorer?

Used to be the Traveller, but those days have passed by.

As for the others, I do like seeing the touristy things (often there is a reason everyone wants to see them!), but also getting out and about a bit.

I refer to myself as a Traveller but not by your definition.
Just love travelling and planning for travel.now in the incredibly fortunate position to be able to do so in comfort.
We often go to places just a little different so in the last 6 years have been to Isla De pascua, galapagos,Ecuadorian amazon, cruising the arctic and Antarctic, visiting the Kamchatka peninsula and the Aleutians. As well as some more normal tourist destinations including Turkey,Jordan,Alaska the black sea,Vietnam,Cambodia and Laos.
On top of that we often go back to places we love so on our upcoming trip we will have our 26th visit to Bangkok and 18th to Tokyo.
The only groupo tours are when cruising. The rest of the time we do our own thing.Discovering new adventures in Bangkok and Tokyo is fun.

Intrepid Tourist. I don't mind heading down the beaten track, but I'll happily take a detour.

Between tourist & intrepid explorer. Hopefully some of my photo angles are better than every other tourist's. ;)

Don't do much travelling for work these days. Given some of my rwsponsibilities, I should be travelling to our regions at least once/year, but haven't been so far. Had a trip to Moscow & Perth last year, and that's been it since 2008.

this thread reminds me of this article...

In defence of the tourist

Yeah but that artile isn't discribing intrepid explorers as much is it's discribing w*nkers. Travelling to a location and seeing the world famous xyz is as valid as travelling to the same location and spending a week living with the locals.

IME the people who look down at others choice of holiday tend to be "toppers" in most parts of their life anyway, and thus not ppl I'd want to invite over for dinner in the first place.

Definitely a mix of Traveller for work (80% of my travel) and Intrepid Explorer when not working. Tours are my idea of hell; and I often avoid "the sights" because they are rarely that great and worse, they are full of other people!

We didn't bother to do any of the famous churches while in Venice, for example, but rather wandered the lanes and got on local commuter transport to see the "real" Venice (most of which was not on the island).

In mountain areas we studiously avoid all the cable cars - and walk up the hills on the path less trodden. In China I have taken local trains and public buses all over the place - much more interesting than tours!

Traveller for work: 70%
Intrepid Explorer: 15% ... rarely on tours, but walking around London & Paris hardly makes me feel very Intrepid
Milage Runner: 15% ... what Drewbles said

Since I retired 6 years back, I really do not know how I fit everything in. Have a brilliant apartment in Bangkok but I'm there for a maximum of 3 months a year. I'm off on the slightest pretext....usually no planning, just on a whim.
I tick the boxes sometimes - 140 countries and counting....love exploring out of the way places, especially throughout SE Asia... but I love my luxuries too and consider the Journey to be as important as the Destination. Intrepid explorer I guess (some just call me a mad eccentric!!) and will continue until the wheelchair arrives.

Sounds like a great lifestyle. Also retired 6 years and at some point in the next 2-3 years will probably get an apartment in BKK for 2-3 months.

I am probably 10% traveller category, the rest very different.

I have aging parents in the UK so visit 2 to 3 times a year (both birthdays + usually one other visit if free).

The UK visit allows me some work to help defray the costs - the work is secondary.

The next category (15%) is to introduce my kids to other cultures - both early 20s and they do not appreciate how lucky they are. Daughter has now got the travel bug, twice in 2 years "happened" to be in Paris for the summer sales and now wants to defer uni and work and travel in Europe for a year. I think that category is backfiring but she will see how tough they are doing it in Europe.

The last is hobbyist. A long time railfan ("anorak" in pommy slang), I visit the UK & Europe for photography, trackbashing and work on various preserved locos.
There is a massive community of railfans with all different interests - mainland European ones are more into photography and travelling on rare rail lines (freight only, scenic routes, etc).
Pommy versions do both plus still take numbers - definetly more idiot savants amongst the UK version.
Our group are mainly photography, tracks and beer - not necessarily in that order.
E.G. A recent German trip - 6 days of photography, visits to heritage rail locations and tasting over 140 different german beers - mainly at brauhaus locations. 9 core attendees from 5 countries with over 10 friends attending for one or more days - usually flying in or driving from another country.
Our perfect location by a scenic railway in a brauhaus with a beer garden and lots of freight trains to photograph. Autofocus becomes more important on your camera as the day goes on - manual settings start coming up with poor shots:cool:.
At last count, I have friends from over 30 countries I can stay with (had a number make the long trip to Perth to stay with us). Accomodation is not a problem.
Amazingly, many of us are (still) married.

I'd say 60% traveller and 40% intrepid explorer for me. Certainly been off the beaten track in much of Australia and now working on the rest of the world.

The food & wine connaisseur would definitely also rate as they certainly feature in all my travel.

I'm a history traveller, I like to learn the history of a place before I go there and relate it to that of other countries that I have visited. But I'm also a garden traveller and seek out the availability of plants that I have seen once I am home.
