Travelling with multiple passports

Is this new?

I have no idea how new it is, but it is rather relevent ; I really would recommend contacting the local consulate and getting the appropriate information from them since , as an Australian Citizen, you cannot get a valid visa for another passport to enter Australia

I have been using my US passport to enter Australia for the last 10 years. Is this law about not being able to apply for a visa new? Just two years ago I went to Australia on my US passport and had zero problems obtaining a visa.

But you are right about talking with an embassy or consulate, I need to do that. Tomorrow I will go, seeing as how today is Sunday. Here's to hoping they have good news for me.
It is likely that both you carrier and Oz Immigration simply assumed you were a US citizen, not knowing of your Oz Heritage.

If I were you I'd simply follow Dave's advice and contact the local consulate to get a passport. I would not refer to any previous access on a USA passport with a Visa unless specifically asked - such may confuse what should be a very straight forward issue.

For anyone else that may find themselves in this situation, I know the solution.

Go down to the nearest embassy/consulate, tell them your situation and most likely they will tell you that you need to get an emergency passport. This is a temporary passport with only 4 pages in it. Depending on if you need it fast you can pay extra for rush processing. The paperwork is mostly the same as getting a regular passport except that there is an extra sheet for a declaration of why you are in need of the emergency passport.

All in all, the fees totaled about 120 US which should be somewhere around 140 AUS. Ouch, but it's the price I pay for not planning ahead.
