Hi,

i had this same question a couple of weeks back for a trip i was looking at in April/May next year. My TA said that usually i would have been out of luck if my mum got sicker/died of the thing/s we knew about while i was away, and i presume before i left.

the rationale being is that it was/will be a pre-existing situation that I knew about when i would have booked the trip and taken out the policy. However, if she got hit by a bus, etc then you could be OK.

i guess it would depend on the individual issuer of the policy??

the TA said i could either not go; or still go "simply"cancel any unused services that i could with the resulting financial loss of course; or don't come back until the end of the trip.

The trip has been put back a bit now..............

Unfortunately I think the OP will find that to be the case....

I think too you will be out of luck. Maybe call Insureandgo - I plan on using them as they seem to deal better with pre-existing issues.

Hi
Ive found a company called Travelguard, a US company that offers Cancel for Any Reason, they also do policies in Australia
Will come back when i hear from them , several other US based insurers seem to offer the same with 95%- 100% of cost back .
They do stipulate the insurance is purchased within 14 days of the airfare etc , plus a family of 4 is around $800USD for a month to Europe

Just be sure to read their PDS in fine detail: I used Insureandgo for my last trip and they have split one incident into three separate claims and therefore take three "excess" fees off the top. That's why they're cheap and accommodating when they're selling you a policy.

Ah. I read about your issues. My concerns are health related pre-existing so will use them if that becomes an issue. That would be a biggie so the medical fees would be high and the excess not so significant as a result. If it is something not related to pre-existing (eg theft/accident etc) then we have an annual policy for MrP's continuing work travel that we will use.

I am in a similar situation to the OP - my partner's father has cancer that is terminal and my partner and I are due to fly to the US in a couple of weeks on the Orbitz deal. We have cover through ANZ card, but my partner was concerned about the card cover, so looked at insure and go, as she has used them previously. From my review of the PDS for both, neither cover the OP's situation, as it is pre-existing. I suspect no Australian insurer will cover it.

I guess only the travellers can be covered for pre-existing then.

I can sympathise. We were in the same situation until mum passed away last December. Also, just a certain age (>85 years) may be an automatic exclusion even where there are no health issues. As it turned out Mum did have a stroke while we were on Santorini but my SIL thought that she would either pass away within 48 hours (and we would not get there in time) or still be with us when we got back a few days later as originally planned. So she did not tell us until we had started to return. Mum stayed wellish for 18 months and then passed away when my SIL was away.

For the OP, might be an idea to think about plans and discuss with relatives as to what options are.

We are also in a similar situation with my Mum, has numerous health problems and 2 years ago after a week into our 7 week trip we had to return from Italy as she suffered a very serious stroke, she is still with us bless her and insists we live our life so we have had the "talk" about her wishes and earlier this year had a month's trip to the USA, thankfully she kept well but I had left POA with my brother and contact for funeral home that Mum wants, also called the funeral home and discussed options, its hard but where there is a pre existing or terminal illness the discussion has to be had.

Definitely - discussions are good. My SIL and brother all decided that if something happened to Mum while we were away we knew we would not be covered by Insurance, and that therefore tough decisions were to be made. Mum did not want us to return home for her funeral, she did not see the point in that, as it was too late for her. It became difficult when she had a major stroke and not expected to last 24 hours - I knew nothing about it until 3 days later. My family kept it quiet - and told 'authorities' not to contact me. My brother was holder of her medical wishes anyway, not me but we both had PofA but either could act. Except, the local Council, decided they would call me - it was the middle of the night so my phone was on silent and thankfully I did not answer it. THEY decided that I should know - against my brother's express wishes. Bloody busybodies need to mind their own business. I was perfectly happy with the way my family handled it - there was nothing I could have done but worry.

But the thing is we were all on the same page with who needed to be told what.

We all decided it was COMPLETELY different if one of our (adult) children was ill.

Your should check with the airline terms and conditions. Some offer free cancellation and refund in case of immediate family death, on presentation of a death certificate.
