Trumps executive order USA entry for potential terrorists from certain countries

If your flight to Canada transits the US the same issues arise. This is because as we all know that you still need a visa even if you aren't leaving the airport.

There may be issues if the plane overflies the US.

That's the beauty of being able to fly directly to Vancouver from Oz these days, without having to transit through the US, regardless of the time saved.

Wow, even for reporting Trump the reaction in the press on this one has been nothing sort of hysterical.

Everyone from Mo Farrah to Sam Dastyari wheeled out to say they have been banned yada yada yada. No, they haven't.

There is no 'Muslim ban' - just a stay of 120 days for citizens of certain countries so they get their vetting process in order (or, as Trump wishes it).

And what about that Trump selected the countries and ignored others due to his 'vested interests' (corruption, wink, wink, nudge, nudge, business in Saudi Arabia). Oops, President Obama included the same countries (four as visa waiver exceptions, the other three as continuing concern, then added). Damn vested interests, letting the Saudis get away with it.

Pursuant to the Act, the Secretary of Homeland Security had sixty days to determine whether additional countries or areas of concern should be subject to the travel or dual nationality restrictions under the Act. After careful consideration, and in consultation with the Director of National Intelligence and the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Homeland Security has determined that Libya, Somalia, and Yemen be included as countries of concern, specifically for individuals who have traveled to these countries since March 1, 2011. At this time, the restriction on Visa Waiver Program travel will not apply to dual nationals of these three countries. DHS continues to consult with the Department of State and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to develop further criteria to determine whether other countries would be added to this list.

Last month, the United States began implementing changes under the Act. The three additional countries designated today join Iran, Iraq, Sudan and Syria as countries subject to restrictions for Visa Waiver Program travel for certain individuals. Under the new law, the Secretary of Homeland Security may waive these restrictions if he determines that such a waiver is in the law enforcement or national security interests of the United States. Such waivers will be granted only on a case-by-case basis. As a general matter, categories of travelers who may be eligible for a waiver include individuals who traveled to these countries on behalf of international organizations, regional organizations, and sub-national governments on official duty; on behalf of a humanitarian NGO on official duty; or as a journalist for reporting purposes.

Also yes, I am going to be caught with President Obama's visa waiver decree after November when I visit Iran. Thanks a heap, Barry.

And lastly, when was the last time some-one congratulated a politician for doing vaguely what they said they would do, and so early in the term?

Hysteria is about right - how else to explain the over-reactions and even outright untruths that we have been subjected to over the last few days.

Another little fact-6 of the 7 countries on the list ban Jews from entering-on a permanent basis.Along with 10 other countries including Malaysia.

Which is incredibly wrong, of course, but Westerners ought not to define their moral and political principles on the basis of being "not quite as bad as Iran or Syria".

[side note: if you're from a country that doesn't recognise Israel, don't go on a visit to Israel and lose your passport while you're there. I'm not entirely sure how my Malaysian aunt managed to fix up her situation, but she got out somehow...]

Really!!?? Boy, they kept that quiet! Wait till the media finds out ... the ABC will be screaming about it! A permanent ban ... wow.

I guess they snuck this ban in this week when the media was pre-occupied with Trump, hence no coverage?

But it highlights the rank hypocrisy of the left. It's Ok for these countries and the left of politics that these countries permanently ban certain nationalities but it's not ok for Trump to suspend (not ban) in the national interest.

Don't forget These countries also ban Jews based on hate. No outcry and hysterical protesting about this. The left has been exposed as the intolerant and hateful especially in the last while.

If some want as a result to bypass the US, good!!. It's about time the Silent majority are not forced to define their morality and political principles on the basis of the hysterical outcry of some. Enter Trump. Exit Left

Typical confected, selfish outrage .... should we talk about human and women's rights in some of these countries?

Looks like that young Canadian PM is learning a lesson on diversity and jumping the gun on tweeter Nocookies | The Australian

A deadly terrorist attack on *Muslims praying at a mosque in Quebec City, which reportedly involved a university student of Moroccan descent, shocked *Canada only hours after its Prime Minister tweeted a statement praising the country’s diversity.

Maybe he should have stuck with the often peddled "mental illness" excuse!

...granted the US is only part of their services...

Exactly - storm in a teacup - I doubt that the US makes up more than 1% of Emirates flights. And I also doubt that more than 1% of their crew come from the countries affected by the temporary suspension. So if my maths is right, it is sweet f all effect on them. :)

I am in QLD but my electioneering days are well and truly over.Once was enough.

Don't be so modest drron. Someone has to take the lead after Pauline gets rolled by the ones who believe Martin Bryant was fitted up!

Now,now.Pauline doesn't know the answers but as an old patient of mine said in 1998-the others don't even know the questions.nothing has changed.

Sorry did not know they had an issue with rights of any kind. The perpetually outraged don't seem to be outraged by this so I think they must be a shining example of utopia.

As it is said in the Italian classic, Il Gattopardo, "Se vogliamo che tutto rimanga come è, bisogna che tutto cambi."

To be fair I don't think (most of) the left are particularly enamoured with most of the countries you talk about either. The difference is that US holds itself up as a bastion of freedom and possibly even equality. And what's more they allow people to by and large freely protest, which is something that the countries who ban Jews don't tend to allow either. Hence there is limited outlets for affecting any sort of protest let alone change in the countries of concern.

And whilst there are some on the left that are indeed intolerant and hateful the majority with left leanings (but perhaps not hardcore) probably just want a fair go for all and want some form of truth ... it seems that media and the trumpocracy are both difficult to believe and the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Personally, the thing that would appear most concerning about the whole issue is it's rushed implementation ... one of the biggest concerns about Trump, from both sides, is his preparedness and willingness to shoot from the hip, so to speak. This does nothing to dispel those concerns.
