Hi Folks,

I'll admit right away that I've not previously tried to be the least bit inventive in my flying habits and have just eaten my dogfood (and been happy!). Since joining the forum in Feb last year my mind has expanded considerably and hence the current question which is a complete newbie question I'm sure.

First; what am I doing? I have family in MEL that I want to visit this year and also want to nip off to Fiji. Pretty flexible with date, first pick is around mid-late Sept. Want to use OneWorld and QF is the obvious choice.

I live in Perth, pretty much the cheapest paying J flight over to MEL and back circa Sep is $1481 each way ($2962 return)

Interestingly, PER-NAN on chosen days in Sep is $2550 return in J. Hmmmm.....

J tickets appear to be fully flexible, with perhaps an 80$ telephone change fee if you have to call QF.

Whats the pitfalls of me doing this?

- Fly PER-NAN in J as expected, have a lovely 6 days in Fiji then,
- Ring QF from Fiji (or maybe I can do this before leaving PER???), tell them I want to stop in MEL for 2 days, pay my 80$ phone fee
- Fly NAN-MEL in J
- Stay in hotel, say hi to family
- 2 days later fly MEL-PER in J

Obvious benefit here is that the fare difference will almost completely pay for the hotel stay when in MEL visiting family.

Aside from the slim chance of no J seats available on my days of choice, anything else obvious that I'm missing here?

The NAN fares have a "one free stopover"¹ clause in each direction - and you can book online, avoiding any assistance fee.

Use "Multi City" (Qantas Multi-City Flights | Round the world | Stopover | Multiple stops)

So it wont cost you any extra.

I just did a September dummy booking: PER-xSYD-NAN Sep 14, NAN-MEL Sep 21 & MEL-PER Sep 27.

Use "(●) Best Price" to choose dates, as some are more expensive than others.

Still can't imagine what it means.
That's the Australian airport(s) where your flight to Fiji departs from and your flight from Fiji arrives into.

In my above example it's SYD (stopover not taken) and MEL (stopover taken).

Ahh, yes. these things always seem sensible when someone explains them. Thanks.

Thanks for the advice, baby steps for me in doing 'interesting' things :) Next time I'll try and make my PER home a 'stopover' and see if I can take advantage of cheaper o/s ticketing.

PER may be tough given that FJ don't fly there.:p

heh. Yes, sure. I wasn't specific in my reply which was misleading. I'm looking at using SIN or KUL as my 'hub' for further travels in the SE Asia region and will be trying to nut out how to spend my time in Australia as a 'stopover' :)
