Was in a TSA line in the USA and saw someone go through the metal detector and it beeped. He then removed a set of keys from his pocket and gave it to the TSA agent.

He then walked through the metal detector again and the TSA agent gave him back the keys

They did not xray the keys.

I remember something similar happened at MEL airport and it was evacuated??????

Would not concern myself with that. It's happened in a similar fashion a few times with me.

From what's posted, the keys carried on the person set off the WTMD Take the keys out and rescan through the WTMD ... no beep ... no worries ...

X-Ray the keys why...to see if they're made of metal??

What the TSA agent did sounds perfectly normal to me. Have had it happen on numerous occasions with other metal objects.

Cheers,

Ah but the keys might have been made of flint - just the thing a wily terrorist could use to start a fire and bring the plane down!

I agree - presumably, the TSA agent did a visual inspection of the keys to ensure they did not contain any blades - there would be no point in x-raying them as well.

I don't see a problem as I have had the same experience at TSA security with my glasses.

Have a look at a set of Mercedes keys. Inside the plastic remote is a metal key to use if the remote doesn't work. Mine was about two and a half inches long - 5cm in the new money. Could have been nicely sharpened and been more effective than a box cutter!

I actually pointed it out to security here in Adelaide and they didn't give a stuff!

You mean a TSA agent acted with common sense and didn't overreact at what was a simple bit of oversight by a pax?

Clearly a mistake. Long may it continue :)

Key word there underlined. ;)

I had an interesting experience with Adelaide airport security last year. I'd just bought a chocolate fondue kit from Haighs, and completely forgot about the sharp forks inside (it was all wrapped up in gold wrapping paper).

Went through the scanner and the security guy said "Is that a chocolate fondue kit?" to which I replied "Yes....ahh, whoops!"

I said "Sorry, wasn't thinking. Just open it up, take the sharp forks out and I'll just take the bowl."

Him: "Oh, but I don't want to mess up the nice wrapping paper. I'll ask my supervisor."

Me: "Really, it's OK. I don't mind."

Him: "No no, just wait there."

Me:

Him (a few minutes later): "OK I checked with my supervisor. All good. Here you go." (Hands it back to me, untouched.)

That's ADL for you. ;)

Hmmm. I think I should resent that :). I prefer to think we just have a more sensible attitude here. I never need to remove an umbrella from my carry-on at ADL but know to have it scanned separately in CBR (for example) otherwise they get most snooty.

Remember too that metal forks are still provided on QF flights (up the front anyhow).

I'm just waiting for someone to realise the danger that those pointy pens and pencils pose.

Richad.

They ban screwdrivers and knitting needles, but allow Pens and Pencils that could be just as effective stabbing tools. I had a colleague who had her laptop security cable confiscated, but not her power lead. If you wanted to strangle someone - either would do an adequate job. Likewise, they still sell glass bottles in duty-free airside - what is to stop someone smashing a bottle using it to threaten cabin/flight crew? This whole concept of prohibited items just doesn't make much sense when you consider the alternative items that a malcontent has at their disposal that could be just as dangerous.

But remember that metal forks are ok onboard aircraft. Its just the metal knifes that are bad .

Oh don't get me wrong, personally I think that was a perfectly good example of common sense...it's just that common sense is not something I expect to see at an airport security checkpoint!

Unless they're blunt beyond recognition, ala American Airlines. ;)
