IME over years of travel to the USA it’s been totally random for me.
Over the past 18 months it’s now 100% thanks to GE :D
Yes, random for me as well, both with AA and DL.

Sadly, I don't have the right Passport to qualify for "Global Entry" enrollment.

Would that passport be British? I have one of those..... is it a UK or EU thing?
 
I almost always get a TSA pre check. Will getting a new p/p affect that adversely? Obviously a new ESTA will be req’d.
 
It’s on my British Passport.
Get it, totally worthwhile. One minute to clear Immigration at LAX.
LAX and DFW seem to have become more efficient with immigration processing, but GE is amazing at horrible airports like HNL, JFK, ORD, MIA, you can save at least 1 hour at each entry into the US!
