TV series discussion {'ware Spoiler Alert}

Does anyone else think that Wil Anderson and Jan Fran's show "Question Everything" on ABC is possibly the worst program ABC has ever made?

Dont know about that but last night was the last episode, so it got canned did it not?

What was your special subject?

Press Gang (UK tv show 89-92) which was on regular rotation on the Afternoon Show on ABC 1990 -1995.

When you apply you have to nominate a subject that has never been done before (no repeats and also a spare), the list is long so no point applying if someone else has already taken a pet subject as you wont be offered an audition. My strategy was to choose a lesser known tv show that i knew well with a smaller number of episodes, so easy to rewatch before hand and unlikely other contestants would know any of the answers unless they were my age. Also helps if its a ABC show, the casting agent was a fellow fan so we clicked at the audition.

None of my competitors had heard of it, so that bit of strategy worked well. And the being the ABC they try to vary the age groups, so we had a 20 something, a 40 something, a 50 something and 70 something. If you choose a mainstream show or movie that is repeated often like Friends or Mash too high a chance someone else will be able to steal answers.

I got all my questions right in round one, but got eliminated in Tom's round because i didn't know much about Barbie dolls. The mistake I made was trying to guess someone else's question (what they don't show you on tv is how much goading there is from producers on set to get you to guess) in special subject round and then on the last question in Tom's round I was last to lock in my answer, if i had copied the girl next to me she would have gone home instead of me because I was ahead, but i lost points and she gained so i went.

I've never been able to bring myself to watch the episode. It was fun though. At least on Pointless I won.

Was hoping to get a call back for a loser episode to have another go, as i would love to know what my final found questions would have been and whether I would have got them all right or not. Alas it is filmed in Melbourne and 2 years of covid means only Victorians have been able to be contestants in 2020 and 2021, where as in 2019 they paid for my flight (during a DCS promo too) and a hotel stay to be on the show.

I can tell you about the audition process if anyone else wants to give it a go.

I'm contemplating applying for Mastermind, which is basically hard quiz without the humour.

I didn't even get through the first ten minutes but I love Gruen

Thanks Lynda ! That's really good to know.

Hard Quiz is my absolute favourite show at the moment.

Since its on every Wednesday, its broadcast is one of the ways I tell the passage of time in lockdown.

e.g. "I watched Hard Quiz last night, so today must be Thursday".

If it wasn't for Hard Quiz, every day would be Groundhog Day ! :)

I liked this article and series.

"...
Where Succession represented the best of this, The White Lotus and the Gossip Girl remake (copying not one, but two, premises) are the worst of it. In these, the format has been reduced to an empty and pandering moralistic tale about bad rich people. The characters feel like educational devices. Gossip Girl is full of guilty young heirs calling each other out on their relative levels of privilege, or for fat shaming, or not attending lectures on deforestation; the unsettling humour of Succession has collapsed into a guilty earnestness. Meanwhile jokes in The White Lotus come with a kind of manically obvious “rich people are stupid and they do stupid things” exaggerated-wink-at-the-audience – a quality I’ve come to think of as “honk honk”. Succession is an original TV programme; its successors, however, are something between a parable and an Instagram infographic about a recent news event."

Having just watched the first episode of Squid Games I’m seriously disturbed this is one of the highest rating shows.
