Don't think you can blame the driver for a $350000 taxi plate or $30000 a year

Like any small business, times change and you adapt or possibly perish!

Pay your drivers more, get a decent app, cabs that turn up, and take you where you want to go, and a rating system

Pretty easy really
 
A $7,500 fine is cheaper than a $350,000 taxi plate... Just saying
 
Uber's "support" isn't going to help a criminal charge...

From what appears to be happening they are paying for a Lawyer, and as mentioned, worst case, at this stage, is a $7500 fine which Uber will pay

It is a test case for Victoria and the rest of Australia though

If UberX is fully banned in Victoria the current state of the taxi industry will just go further down the drain!

I assume they start compounding after a while, plus a fine on your record is on your record.

Just saying.


Not exactly barracking for the taxi industry here, but the argument really needs to shift off why Uber is better than a taxi (or the opposite thereof) and more onto how Uber can be "legalised" or not seen as in breach of the law.

I'm all for Uber and was very supportive initially (and actually tried to work with them in regards to a new HC business), however the more I dealt with the 20somethings who work for them and clearly have no grasp of what they're getting themselves into, the more concerned I got.

My major concern still lies with the poor UberX driver who has been lied to by the company in order to make Google big $$$. This has the potential to ruin a lot of people's lives.
 
Typical example of government ineptitude, and over-regulation.

It's sad that our country is so backward.
 
On another note, Uber Sydney has apologised for the Surge Pricing scandal during the recent Martin Place incident.


AN APOLOGY FROM UBER SYDNEY

The events of last week in Sydney were upsetting for the whole community and we are truly sorry for any concern that our process may have added.

Our priority was to help get as many people out of the CBD safely in the midst of a fast-moving event. The decisions we made were based only on helping to achieve this but we communicated this poorly, leading to a lot of misunderstanding about our motivations.

Surge pricing is algorithmic and kicks in automatically when demand for rides outstrips the supply of cars that are on the road. This encourages more drivers to the area where people are requesting rides. As an increasing number of people were requesting rides that morning in the CBD, surge pricing came into effect automatically and this is when you might have seen higher prices.

We didn't stop surge pricing immediately. This was the wrong decision. We quickly reversed course and provided free rides to people needing to leave the CBD. In the end, no rider was charged to leave the CBD on Monday and all higher fares resulting from surge pricing earlier in the day were fully refunded.

It's unfortunate that the perception is that Uber did something against the interests of the public. We certainly did not intend to. We will learn from this incident and improve as a result of this lesson. Uber is committed to ensuring users have a reliable ride when they need it most - including and especially during disasters and relevant states of emergency. We take our community commitment very seriously in the 250+ cities Uber serves around the globe.

Please know that we have listened to the feedback and we are working to standardise a global policy to ensure we're serving communities in the most efficient, effective and helpful way possible at all times. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims' families, those that were injured and the Sydney community of which we are so proud to be a part.

Simple and it's already happening from what an Uber Black/X driver told me the other day. He drivers both Uber Black and his own car for Uber X as he can't get access to an Uber Black car over the weekend...

Uber X drivers are getting Hire Care accreditation, before the Melbourne Court case in Feb
Uber X drivers will need to have their car inspected/roadworthy every 3/6 months along with an additional fee paid to the Gov at some stage

That should fix both the current "grey areas"

Then insurance, which should be easily fixed once the vehicles are operating legally, insurance companies, like in the USA will provide insurance for say 20 hours of UberX driving per week

I haven't caught a taxi in years, I use Uber Black or a VHA booking for airport trips, or with Etihad their free transfers :p
 
On the legal front - There is a reason that I am not an UberX driver...

Noone has actually answered this and some are throwing around the criminal record words IMO recklessly if we don't know. There is a big difference between a fine and a criminal record!

Now having said that was told by a 'legal' taxi driver this morn that the accreditation test referred to only needs to be undertaken by taxi drivers with less than 5 yrs exp. So indeed many of those fabulous Uber Black operators (taxi drivers incl) won't need to undertake said test.

I used uber x in AKL on Sunday. Interestingly the driver turned up in a taxi. $43NZD from the pullman to the airport is substantially cheaper than the regular taxi fare of around $80.

I attended an Uber X drivers Q&A session at their office in Melbourne earlier this week and was told by their operations manager that all of their drivers will have to pass that test soon to continue driving with uber. It will be a mandatory requirement for all drivers.
