Uber ups the ante and drops fares

Uber has thrown the latest grenade in its war against taxis by dropping their fares on a trial basis. From Friday, Uber users in south-east Queensland will enjoy fares that are 20 per cent cheaper than they were before.

Can't say I found the price of Uber that much of an issue, down a further 20% will hit the drivers pretty hard.

That makes an Uber from where I live to the airport around $20-25.

Thanks Milefest. A good incentive to finally make the switch. I've been meaning to download the app and give it a try

They're saying it's only a trial - and that drivers should get more, as they'll be on the road with PAX rather than sitting idle. They also mentioned if this doesn't occur, prices will go up.

Indeed. Lets hope it does benefit the drivers, from what I've heard, driving an Uber is already difficult with the income they make.

Used Uber in Brisbane a couple of times over the weekend.

Drivers said it has mildly increased the number of customers they receive but not enough to cover the 20% discount in fares.

I love using UBER, much better + cleaner than driving in a taxi and the drivers are actually friendly!! The 20% discount is much appreciated :)

Partly that, I hear a lot of the time they're just waiting for a fare.

I think the main reason though is to capture a new user-base. Maybe it'll cause some people to think twice about using public transport?

I'm only a 10 minute commute into the Brisbane CBD and a Uber fare is $2 more than what it would be on the bus. Takes the same amount of time and it's no more than a 2 or 3 wait at home, compared to walking five minutes to the bus stop, missing the bus and waiting 15 minutes for the next service. Well worth the money when it's 30 degrees plus outside.

I took my first trip under the new rates in Bris from CBD to inner south - ~6.6 km ~10.8 mins = ~$12.50.

Certainly a bargain compared to taxis and a good deal compared to PT if there's 2 of you. Still more than double the price if you're on your own though.

What's the fare between the CBD and the domestic terminal assuming no tolls and no traffic? And are there typically ubers nearby for 11pm arrivals?

The app estimates $31-$40 from George street to BNE Dom terminal.

There's always cars around at 11 pm, but on Friday or Saturday would probably be surge pricing, so it will be more expensive.

Well a cab will be at least $50 including CC surcharge, which uber doesn't charge. Airtrain is $17.50.

2x the public transport price is pretty cheap, though if I'm on my own and in town, I'm happy to jump on the train.

Go catch is new in the market so Uber trying to make it hard for them to get some market share.
