UK Merchant details - failed credit card refund to Australian Bank

Hoping someone with banking knowledge or UK knowledge can help me.

I made a transaction for a hotel in London and paid. The hotel subsequently cancelled due to using the hotel for other purposes. They keep telling me they have refunded the transaction. My bank in Australia keep saying that they have not received the refund and unfortunately the credit card is now closed.

I am assuming that every credit card transaction whether it be a payment or refund would generate a transaction number. Does anyone know what the correct name for the transaction number is in the UK? Would there be seperate number for the payment and refund?

First step would be to dispute the transaction as a chargeback.
If that fails take it to the AFCA.

The status of the account does not affect your rights. When did the charge occur and refund occur. There would be a transaction number for both the charge and refund.

Personally I would just do a chargeback. This will avoid any currency conversion losses. Your email from the hotel advising cancellation should be enough evidence.
