I am looking for routing suggestions to go to the US and the UK using USDM/& or LM in J. Starting in MEL for 2 pax. Currently have access to 272,000 LM'S and prepared to purchase USDM on the current promotion with 3 active accounts. Travel for Oct/Nov 2014.

Appreciate any help :)

Lifemiles will not give you a free stopover. USDM can give you a stopover en route to Europe, but pick CDG or FRA as your stopover to avoid the LHR passenger tax.

You will need to book these ASAP given the merger settlement announcement today.

Thanks smit0847 for your response. I don't think I worded my original question correctly. I am aware there are no stopovers with LM. I've done a few searches for US in particular and could not find anything direct in J, searching on LM and awardtravlr for flights. Absolutely nothing from MEL.

Is it possible to get flights direct to LAX from SYD, or preferably MEL, at all with LM or USDM?

Given that I have the limited time to buy USDM on bonus, I thought perhaps I could use USDM or LM to get to the US and then use the other FF program to hop over to the UK for a visit.

Perhaps it would be best to travel to the UK (or Europe) and "hop" to the US instead if trying to do it the other way round?

There are occasionally direct UA flights that come up but these can be rare at peak times. OZ is probably the next one-stop option via ICN. You can try searching LM with OZ as the preferred carrier - it might bring something up. If you cant see if on the LMs website it cannot be booked through LMs.

USDM can usually be done to Asia via any combination of SIN/BKK/ICN/HKG/NRT/TPE etc.

Try using awardtravelr for just a few segments at a time (i.e. ICN-LAX) and then you can feed the USDM agent the flights.

I would recommend getting to the US via Europe (with a Euro stopover) and then coming back via Asia.

I have UA MEL-LAX (via SYD) in Feb in J with USDM points. They were only available IIRC on Tue & Wed, and well in advance > 320 days. Also got the return via CPH (stopover) & SIN for only 10k more miles, although this appears to be against the USDM rules.

However I see 2 problems with your requirement.

1. With UA changing from 747 to 777 next year, it looks like J award availability has dried up. There does seem to be plenty of availability on CA via PEK though.

2. With US slated to leave *A early next year, there are some reports on FT of difficulty getting *A awards. Get onto them ASAP & be prepared to HUACA several times.
