Currently at Coolangatta Airport about to fly QF J to Melbourne. Went to access Qantas lounge prior to departure only to be told we can’t gain access because the door won’t open!! I understand some things are beyond anyone’s control, but seriously in this day and age, they can’t open the door!! Told it would be fixed over an hour ago but still shut as tight as the WA border. Not even any offer of some sort of voucher to buy a beer in the terminal. Could’ve flow Virgin J for $400 less and got the equivalent lounge experience, ie: none!

Seems like an open and shut case.

And just to add insult to injury, got back to ADL after 90 minute layover MEL and luggage didn’t turn up!! Seriously, do QF think they don’t have any opposition?

Door opening is only a CL benefit, you need to read up on the fine print.

All these doors are electronically linked to a central computer called the Building Management System (BMS). The BMS controls all air con, lights, doors, security like CCTV and all sorts of locks, for the whole airport. The BMS allows centralised monitoring and timer control.

In this case, it's generally something broken with the wiring or the door lock or reed switch, so the door lost contact with the BMS, hence cannot be released.

When this happens, you need to wait for the tech to come and fix, there is nothing you can do. Just bad luck.

Or you could use your brain and design a manual override system, for when things inevitably go wrong. No such thing as bad luck when it comes to engineering.

It was also reported that there is an emergency door, so people were able to leave. However, Qantas Pub staff didn’t allow anyone to enter. 🤔

The Virgin Hobart airport lounge door is STILL stuck shut FYI if anyone is trying to get in, hopefully they get it fixed soon!

There most certainly is. I would have thought that this could have certainly been a usable workaround.

So, the big green button on the inside doesn’t open the door without power. I had thought that this released the mechanism which kept the door closed. Apparently not.

Also, I’ve seen hotels that have a ‘normal’ door located either adjacent to, or very near, the electronic (auto-opening) door.

Of course there would be emergency exits most of the time (as per fire regulations), but they are usually far away from your usual things, via some back alleyway, well away from check in desk where the dragons are, so they may just say it's not worth it. Who knows. I'm not defending or criticising of them not letting people in, I'm just simply saying these things are a lot more complex, it's not 'just a door' and 'why not just push it open', and can be a bigger PITA than what people expect, having worked in that controls automation industry.
