Not sure if anyone can help here, my partner and I are booked to fly from SYD-JFK then JFK-SFO in Feb next year and booked online with Qantas. The flights are showing up in our FF section but it's not letting us select seats, and for some legs it has selected seats for us which aren't even sitting together?

Haven't booked Int'l with Qantas online for ages so not sure if it's normal to not be able to select seats this far out from flying date or whether it's a problem that's only affecting us? I wondered whether it might be to do with the A380's being withdrawn on the AUS-USA route but we're flying on QF107 which I'm pretty sure was always a 747-400 anyway.

Thanks for your time.

phildaley,

A phone call to QF is in order here. With everything going on at the moment it is probably not unusual for some things to go haywire IMHO.

+1 the phone call. QF hasn't put a charge on this service yet:) (although I suspect it will happen some time:-|)

cheers skip

I just use 131313 unless you have access to the Platinum number. Cheers

It could be your status (i.e bronze can only access seat selection 7 days out from the flight).

Even lowly bronze can select seats at any time after booking - just give Qantas a call and all will be fixed.

Thanks everyone for your help, just a quick update - a ph call to QF and they were able to sort it all out fairly easily and we are now allocated seats together on all 5 legs.

I'm pleased I asked the question though rather than waiting until check in and it possibly being too late!
:p

Are you sure? Or can it be done by phone after you book, then online once within 7 days of departure?

Yes I got seat allocation (by phone) 10 months ahead of departure on SYD-LAX and also allocated seats online for 2 AA flights in the US. At check-in (which wouldn't work online) we were allocated different seats on the AA flights and QF couldn't change them. However AA staff in Admirals Club (LAX and ORD respectively) were only too happy to fix them - although couldn't understand why they had been changed.

This changed about 6 months ago.

These days you need Status of some sort to pre-select seats on qantas international flights more than 7 days beforehand.

See here:
For domestic flights, without status you cannot select a seat until OLCI opens.

I had thought that was the case. Thank you for clearing up the confusion serfty!

I guess those are the new rules but fortunately QF staff don't always follow them. Two friends flew from LHR to MEL in November and allocated seats by phone in September, and they were not even QFF. However they have now joined.

Slightly OT, but has anyone else experienced differences in availability depending on who you speak to at Qantas??

I needed to change a seating request today due to a change of aircraft on QF108 (LAX-SYD) in January. They have pulled the A380 over that period so aircraft are being moved around...anyway, I wanted 40A and 40B on a 747. EF showed it as available and not blocked for me, but because QF108 is booked from JFK, I can't change that sector online. So I call Qantas. Helpful gent that answers does his thing but says the seat is restricted. I ask him to try anyway and see if it will stick. He does, but it doesn't. Anyway, later on, I see on EF that 40C has been taken and I start to worry that 40A/B won't be far behind being snaffled, so I call again. This time the woman I get tells me the same thing, but then says, "hang on, let me try something". Lots of tapping is heard in the background but she comes back and tells me that she's put the request in and she'll refresh the screen to see if it holds. Voila! It did. I check in EF and can see that the seats I was in are now vacant and 40A/B are taken.

My question to you all is...what did she do differently and why couldn't the other consultant do what she did? Like I said, they were both helpful, but one came up with the goods, and one didn't...

I'm guessing she put a request into "Seating" - perhaps approval was automated ...?
