I'm a little puzzled as to why you didn't get your HKG - LHR boarding pass in MEL? Were both flights on the same PNR? If so you should have been issued your HKG-LHR boarding pass there, if they where not on the same PNR, and you never mentioned that you had an onward flight then that could be the reason you never got a boarding pass.

Often see situations where onward boarding passes are not available with surprising regularity, "computer says no".

I guess I've been lucky then, the only time I've haven't been able to get my onward boarding pass was with AA (and I guess that helped put them relatively low on my list for likable airlines)
 
I have never flown QANTAS long haul international, but my many UA flights still give me nightmares ;) VA all the way.
