Was I right or obnoxious?

This evening at BKK AP I checked in for JQ30 and then sat down to prepare for the security screening. Everything ready, computer and LAG bag in hand and off to the screening area.

I walked towards one machine but was directed to another where a bloke (Yank as it turned out) was starting realise he needed to prepare for the screening. I went to go in front of him but he whinged “hey there’s a queue here y’know!” He then starts pulling stuff out and moved right to the entrance to the machine so I couldn’t get through. Then the security guard comes over and tells him to empty his pockets and asks if he has a computer which means even more delay whilst he finds it and pulls it out.

She asks me the same questions and I tell her I am ready to go through.

As soon as he started his whinging I asked him if he was ready to go through which he ignored and then as he continued going through his stuff I reminded him that I was ready to go now and he was holding up the line.

The final indignity for him was that his luggage needed another person to look at it on the X-ray whereas mine went straight through. Then he stopped and started getting everything together again whereas I just picked up my stuff and headed off towards the lounge where I am now.

Should I have sucked it up and kept quiet whilst waiting in the queue or was I right to try and go ahead of him and then make a smart alec comment?

I would have have made a scene... enough to embarrass him!

Hvr,

What you have done is perfectly normal IMHO. Remember that many from the LOTFAP are very touchy about lining up and people queue jumping (or being seen to do so)

I read your post then realised I just wasted 1 minute of my life. trivial stuff that happens all throughout life.

Flying in/out of the Gold Coast I come across this a fair bit, I always have my bag + 1 tray of stuff, so if someone holds up the line I grab my two trays and walk to the front of the x-ray machine and push my stuff through. Never had anybody pull me up on it.

A lot of places security gets annoyed if you don't overtake them - they're holding the whole process up after all. Just keep a smile the whole way though and screening is never a problem.

Yep I had someone have a go at me as I was in the express line and it cut in front when we got to security check point.

But if the person is not ready you are fine to go around them. IMHO

If I'm ready to go I just go around the slow people. They usually stop well before the entry to the x-ray. Never had any comments, people seem to understand. Since the guy whinged it's acceptable to have words back in the situation you describe, IMO. If he went through quick and didn't stuff around (hypothetically) then not fair to comment.

I think after travelling through the US and parts of Europe, you get so used to people that do this one after another after another......., that as annoying as it is, I seemed to have developed a block out zone for a few minutes or I'd get very impatient!

Depends what stage of my life I was at. These days I just move on, unless there is a direct threat.

You learn to conserve your energy for life's real battles.

I agree Sprucegoose. Often when you stand and wait you see some great interactions which you can later talk about. A few weeks ago I saw a guy arguing over a near empty very large tube of toothpaste which security wasn't allowing to go forward. The guy behind him handed him his toothbrush and said "mate, can you clean you teeth here so we can all get to the lounge".

Some patience for the non regular travellers is required but I usually find, a polite I'm ready do you mind if I go through before you usually works.

Think a lot of the security checks are poorly set up, and create more problems than there should be.

I agree you should jump ahead, there should really be two lines, the getting ready line and the ready line. Last week in Cairns I had to hunt for my aerosol and it took a few minutes, I was happy for people to go past.

And you wasted more time replying,. Somewhat oxymoronic!

I have to admit I would have been likely to have replied something like "Then move your ****ing self!"

Yes so many important world issues are debated and discussed here.
Its a travel site the posting is valid.

yes its a travel forum but does every minor incident like someone not letting someone move ahead in a queue deserve a 2 or 4 or even 10 page discussion?? id rather hear the op talk about how his flight was or hear a tip about a hotel he recommends in bangkok.

this forum can be really petty...

It was JQ - therefore you know it ranged from barely tolerable to downright awful...

Nobody is forcing you to read the thread ... or reply to it. I would say that taking the time to have a dig, twice, in a thread that you have no interest in is getting pretty close to the definition of petty.

fwiw, I hate people who aren't ready before the line and then stand there blocking the queue. I usually just work my way around them. The absolute worse is the BNE DOM QF security check, where people cut across from the normal queue to the WP queue and then stand there fumbling around getting stuff out of their bags, while I've had mine out before I even got to the start of the queue, prepared to just walk straight through without having to stop.

I am normally quite efficient unloading my bags/clothing/etc for inspection however if there is someone faster than I am, I have no issue in motioning/telling them to go past me.

I generally dislike all those folks who reallyyyyyyyy take their time in unlooooooooooooooooooading their thingggggggggggs ;)
