Up to 35,000 Velocity points for switching to AGL Energy

Just received text message from AGL noting welcoming me to AGL velocity value saver offer, pack on the way in mail & 45 days till velocity points drops.
I just got the same message but be aware it says points will drop within 45 days of them supplying your energy. If they wait until the end of the billing cycle to switch over it could be a while.

It depends on your local distributor. In VIC we have electricity smart meter so it can happen fairly quickly. No smart meter for gas and meter reads happen every 60 days roughly so it’ll happen when the next meter read happens or you can request a special meter read for extra cost.

When I was living in NSW meter reads happen every 90 days for electricity and gas and no smart meter so if you are unlucky with the meter read timing you will be waiting a while for the points to land.

signed up on the phone on Thursday as could not complete online and 6000 points arrived today (existing customer 3000 for electricity and 3000 for gas)

Does AGL and red energy have exclusion periods (and if so how long)? Wonder how much churning we can do.

Bit of a hit losing the 8c EV charging from OVO but the $200 offsets it. Might give this a go then swap to the AGL EV plan after 45 days.

How did you find OVO? I looked at moving to them mid-2023 but missed their (very good) offer and the next offer was line ball with my current provider.

I think it depends on where you live. My daily charge is highish with them ($1.05 vs $0.76 with others) but I thought the 8c overnight charging would offset it. Problem is the “peak demand surcharge” which is adding 25% to the monthly bill. AGL doesn’t seem to charge that.

I signed up online, downloaded the app, could log in and see the "Connection in progress" message. Then got a text saying to contact AGL to complete the connection.

Got onto the chatbot, went through all my details only to have the person ask me what plan I wanted to sign up for... Eventually got signed up to the Velocity plan but that was two days ago and I haven't received any emails about the connection. Also unsure if my remaining QLD Govt. energy credit will transfer over.

Red energy has a 12 month waiting period.

This is correct but it's a little different to the 12 month credit card waiting/exclusion periods.

Red will pay the signup bonus once per NMI every 12 months, regardless of when you were last a customer.

You can sign up, stay with Red for 11 months, churn out to another provider for a month, and then churn back to get another bonus. I am in the process of switching to AGL for this promo and will switch back to Red as soon as the AGL SUB posts.

Is that household or customer name?

Per meter NMI/property address. You can't switch the account between different residents and receive the bonus multiple times. (I have tried!)

Excellent post, thank you.

I just signed up for gas only as I have solar and a good plan with EA. But it was interesting that EA had an offer of a better gas plan for me to save a few hundred per year but when I looked at the AGL pricing it was still better than the new EA pricing.
So it will be worth it even without the mountain of points I'll be getting...

Not sure 10k points could be deemed a mountain, ha!

What an annoying sign up process.

Signed up online, got an SMS saying I needed to call to provide my meter number, when I called I needed to go through the entire sign up process again online. Took about 30 minutes.

Operator was a bit quirky. Said the Velocity offer was enormously popular, and wondered why. Had to explain the concept of reward seats to them.

That's good to know, thanks! Interesting, I assume that would potentially be an issue if you moved and the previous customer was also doing the same (unlikely as that may be)? But prevents householders simply swapping between partners every six months (unless they also link the name, must admit I haven't read the T&Cs any further).

Yep, in that situation I believe the system wouldn't process a bonus if the previous resident had received one from Red in the last 12 months.

Maybe Red would make manual exceptions if a new lease agreement or transfer of ownership can be produced - no idea.

Thanks - makes sense. We've lived in our place long enough that's not an issue, but I'll def bear that in mind as it looks like I'll be moving back to Red sooner than I thought!
