I am flying Auckland to Perth on Air NZ in 2 weeks.

I have booked Economy, Class T, Tasman Smart Saver

What are my chances of an upgrade? I am a velocity gold member and also an Avianca (Star Alliance) Gold Member.

What is the best way to ask/get an upgrade?

Very unlikely you'll get a free upgrade (unless of Y cabin oversell). I'd recommend either using their OneUp program to bid for an upgrade, or you can try paying at the airport.

Definitely place a OneUp upgrade bid if able.

For a OneUp bid you will only be able to bit to premium economy I believe as they sell this on that route. You will get a much better price doing a Oneup than they will give you at the airport. Before they sold premium economy on the MEL-AKL route, I used to book saver economy and place a $180 bid to J and accepted 6/6 times. This is no longer an option with Prem Y unless you book Prem Y or upgrade to it.

NZ is really good at revenue management.... Ive been Gold or Elite for 10 years on the Airpoints program... the only upgrades IVE had were those I supported with UG certificates or Airpoint $$....

Only chance of a free UG.. as already mentioned is in the case of an oversold Y cabin.....
