Just wondering people who have Platinium what is the shortest notification period you have had advising of the success of an upgrade?
International flights

At the lounge/ on departure. Are you asking about domestic or international.

For me around T29 and by notify i mean i logged in and saw it, i had checked it several times earlier so i know it wasn't earlier than T30. I got the sms when i landed in Sydney. I put my overseas sim in MMB but they didn't use it.

Perhaps check the Upgrade success failure thread for more stats and reports on times.

If you are travelling solo, you can request that your upgrade request be considered as late as at the gate if not confirmed earlier. Say someone doesn't rock up or they have a missed connection then they would have to wait till they know they won't make it before upgrading someone.

For international the defined benefit is up to 48 hours out as a WP, but in practice it can be more than that, perhaps up to 60 hours. Note if it's a route with Chauffeur Drive those bookings close 48 hours out, so if you get an upgrade to J before 48 hours out jump online and book your Chauffeur Drive ASAP.

I haven't had an upgrade at the gate yet, but I have been in lounges and have heard people being called to the front desk. I think a fair bit of the time that would be to give them a new boarding pass as they've been upgraded.

I had a friend who got upgraded at the gate for the DXB-LHR leg of QF9 as a SG. Upgraded that late my friend had no choice of seat. My friend got a seat in Emerald City while I was back in the main Business cabin.

Some people don't want to get upgraded as late as at the gate as there's no choice of seat and if you're not already entitled to it by status you miss out on lounge access, extra free checked baggage etc. Only solo travellers can request their upgrade be processed as late as at the gate and if you're flying QF9 MEL-DXB-LHR for example a gate upgrade would only be considered for the DXB-LHR leg, I think.

Some passengers will fly MEL-DXB on QF and then onto European destinations with Emirates. So there would usually be gate upgrades for the QF9 DXB-LHR leg.

With a gate upgrade when you go to the gate they'd scan your boarding pass. It would give an error beep and they'd go and print your new boarding pass (or find and hand you one they'd printed earlier to save time). When you're going to board a flight if you're very observant sometimes you can see some boarding passes laid out on a desk they've got ready waiting to hand to people.

You have to be prepared with any upgrade that you may get the last seat you would've picked in the cabin. Though any seat in Business is a lot, lot better than sitting further back.

Latest was Lounge for me ... no SMS message.

Arrived at DXB J Lounge (back as SG) with 10mins to start of boarding of QF10, handed over my BP and was requested to provide my passport.

New BP handed back.

Regards,

BD
