1) International upgrades are on a waitlist basis - not confirmed at time of request
2) How many points you need depends on your original booking class
3) You can find out from the table here: Frequent Flyer - Using Points - Flight Upgrades - About Flight Upgrades (I woudl assume you are in the discount economy class, as it's not particularly easy to book a Y class fare)

Clever people will buy a full Y fare for not a full Y price. You need to ring the qf travel centre and tell them y class, nothing else.

What is your qf status? The points are one thing, getting the opprtunity is quite another!

Do you really mean Y to J? Its vey unusual to purchase a Y fare. Most people would be purchasing discount economy fares. QF require more points to upgrade from discount economy fares that for upgrading from a full Y fare. Please confirm the actual fare booking class as that will determine the points required to upgrade.

Then when you know the original economy booking class, look up the points required for an upgrade to business class on the Qantas web site under the Frequent Flyer pages.

They should give you points if you want an upgrade to J from full Y :lol:

It is not the easiest thing to find as it is not on the "Using points" page or the "Upgrades page".

This link will take you to a flash :( calculator

Alternatively you can go to this website:

MileageMonkey 0.95022

Choose your origin/destination and then go back to the simple QF table:

Sorry guys just didn't know where to look, seems better to buy cheaper economy then upgrade. Was told can try upgrade up to 3months before flights. I'm only silver member.

You can apply to be waitlisted for an upgrade up to 3 months before the flight. But all waitlists are only processed in the 24 hours before the flight departure.

Also note that the cheapest fares cannot be upgraded. That includes N, E, O and Q fares.

Hello Limewood,
When you are looking to do this the alternate way from what is suggested is to start in the lowest class you can handle travelling in.Now if that is Economy then go the suggested path.
You have not said if you have a lot of points.
Do you have enough points for one PE or J ticket?
You could get one outright and grab it on points then look at a discount I class PE or J seeing you can meet those rules.

Also have a look at how you are going to get there and what aircraft is scheduled to run, why waste points when you might be able to snag a better seat for free. From the end of the year the BNE-LAX route will be operated by 4 class ER aircraft sold as 2 class.......

didn't understand this...

operated by 4 class ER aircraft sold as 2 class

That is a 4 class plane offering 2 class service.
It means some seats will be First class seats that someone can get as Business class
service and PE seats with Economy service.
More comfort for more than 50 passengers per flight I think and probably more.

This is QF15 BNE-LAX on the 8th Feb - you can see the PE seats currently being sold as economy and unallocated ;)

My comparison if you book PE, you might get a J seat (or skybed):

Rows 29 and 30 are skybeds.

Or if the dont get many J tickets sold, they could close F and not use the F seats at all.

Thanks Markis10 for your layout map on the switched 747-400.I think our community will be happy to see the opportunity you presented.Well done!

It should be noted its pretty much a permanent switch for next year, rather than a one off change.

You need 192000 to go J to LAX out of Brisbane. Now the retail value of such a points redemption is at the high end of values.
A couple of nights ago a relative booked for 2 to go thru SYD to LAX on the A380 in J and I suggested rows 11 thu 13 which this site says are the best.
Can you get the 12000 points quickly and do you want the A380 ex SYD or MEL?
