Have 200,000 points ATM.

Hello Limewood,
When you are looking to do this the alternate way from what is suggested is to start in the lowest class you can handle travelling in.Now if that is Economy then go the suggested path.
You have not said if you have a lot of points.
Do you have enough points for one PE or J ticket?
You could get one outright and grab it on points then look at a discount I class PE or J seeing you can meet those rules.

I saw you could get PE to LAX off east coast of Australia for about $2,900 that was finishing tonight.
My belief is you rank higher than a Y ticket holder in then applying for a points upgrade to J which would be a good use of your points.
I did this for my son and he got the upgrade to J and I think the points were 32,000 each way so a total of 64,000.
Others have queried whether a Platinum in Y ranks ahead of a PE bought ticketed passenger.I believe you get the first chance from Premium Economy.
Today I booked family for the J flight back LAX to SYD for 96,000 points each out 354 days ahead. When you book one way at a time online the flight availability is good because many like to book in one go for the complete trip so you dont compete with them.

PE is Premium Economy and could also show as Y+ in posts.
You seem to be on that ride for points creation so just be careful not to get totally hooked like I am.
Status to Silver gets you seat selection then it is points that can get you into the part of the plane you want with Qantas.
