Upgrade through Business rewards or Frequent Flyer?

I have purchased a return flight SYD to LAX with Qantas. Premium economy saver on the way there - Business class on the way out (paid fare).

I would like to request up upgrade (with points) for the Premium economy leg to Business class.

I'm wondering, is it better to request the upgrade from our Qantas Business rewards account. Level - Tier 1. Or, as a Frequent flyer with Silver status? I know they prioritise when picking those for upgrades, so do you have more chance via a Qantas Business rewards booking with a Tier 1 status? Or is it all done via the indivdual's status?

Does anyone know which these would be prioritised? I understand the priorites with FF flights. But not whether Qantas Business rewards is prioritised over FF status.

Thanks in advance.

As far as I am aware (and I do this a lot) priority will be via the passenger's FF status as usual. Points deduct from the chosen account. So it shouldn't matter which account you use for the upgrade (provided you have sufficient points available)

Yes that is correct. The points will be deducted from either account. But the question i have is more around the best chance of getting upgrade. Are Qantas Business rewards tickets prioritised first? As I know they work through a list of people and based on factors like your status and if you are flying alone so wondered if I have more chance from the Business rewards request or the FF individual request? Or is it all based on the individual flying and their status?

I think was sirchop is saying is that the only difference requesting it from QBR is that the points deducted will come from the balance, rather than yours personally. It doesn’t increase nor decrease your chances over requesting it from your personal account.

You’ll obviously be behind any P1, Platinum or Gold members requesting upgrades from PE, however you should have an odds-on chance given (IME) Qantas will upgrade a silver travelling in PE over a Platinum travelling in economy.

It's better to request from the personal account and then reimburse from the business account. If your flight gets cancelled and you need a refund of the points upgrade, it is a major pain in the rear to refund a points upgrade that was taken from a business account whereas it's very easy if it was taken from a personal account.

I assume this is simply transferring the points after the successful upgrade from the QBR account into the personal account?
That would be the case - having typed that, the required number of points needs to be in the members account before any upgrade is assessed/processed.

Correct.

What does this mean sorry?
To attain Points Club (if that’s relevant to your situation), you need 150k points earn.

A max of 20k from flying and the rest from others points earn. ie credit card earn, QF Hotels, QF Wine etc etc. Recently they allowed 20k from QBR transfers.

The main benefit is earning SC when flying on reward flights.

Bottom line, just another reason to transfer the points to the flyer rather than do it via QBR portal.
