Just got this e-mail .... online request didn't work, but now it shows:

Upgrade to:
Premium Economy
Points: 60,000
Request Upgrade
Upgrade to: Business
Points: 96,000

Can someone check availability for QF108 on 30 May please? :)

Hmmm tempting !!!

Register for a Flight Upgrade Award

As you have booked an upcoming international trip that includes travel in Economy from New York to Sydney you may like to know that for a limited period until 2 June 2009, you can use your Qantas Frequent Flyer points to register for a Flight Upgrade Award* from Economy to Premium Economy^ or Business.

Within Economy there are a number of different seat classes and your seat booking class is usually not eligible for upgrade. However, for a limited time we are lifting this restriction on seats booked in N, O or Q class and your seat is now eligible to register for an upgrade*.

To be eligible to upgrade you must register your request online at qantas.com before 2 June 2009. Telephone requests are not eligible. Please also remember that you can only register for an international Flight Upgrade Award from 90 days to 24 hours before your departure from your first port of origin.

Hmm I wonder ... I don't know if I should. I have the points, 96,000 is more than a return economy to Vancouver ! but I don't think I'll ever have this opportunity again, and I only paid $750 return to New York. What does everyone think?

Interesting.
I received the email to cover my next domestic flight in July.

Looking at my flight to New York latr in the year one cannot put a request in yet...but depending on the leg it becomes available to make a request from early August. This is defintely new as I had licked in the Upgrade Button in the past and it said that the fare type was not upgradeable.

Mind you the leg costs are not cheap!!

31 Oct 09 Melbourne Los Angeles Upgrade to: Business
Points: 144,000 Request period opens
02 Aug Saturday
31 Oct 09 Los Angeles New York (Jfk) Upgrade to: Business
Points: 48,000 Request period opens
01 Aug Friday
13 Nov 09 New York (Jfk) Los Angeles Upgrade to: Business
Points: 48,000 Request period opens
15 Aug Friday
13 Nov 09 Los Angeles Melbourne Upgrade to: Business
Points: 144,000 Request period opens
16 Aug

PE is 30K for the LAX JFK legs and 90K for MEL LAX legs.

However the wording is not clear and so I am not sure if that point cost is per pax....oe per my party of two.

I would guess that QF are filling the back of the plane by discounting...so want to move more to the empty front end.

Though again the point cost is not cheap is that is per pax price...so there is probably a good earn it for QF.

Thanks TG!

Much more room than the flight I had on the way

Lots of seats in business hmm!

Qantas amazes me with some of their policies. Several times, I have checked in for a domestic economy flight Bris-Melb return. 30 minutes before boarding, I check at the Qantas Club service desk to see if I can upgrade using some points and get refused, despite Business being half sold. Here is their best opportunity to burn some points out of the system and their policy not to upgrade a discounted fare prevents this occuring. Surely, the policy could allow for upgrades a certain time before a flight departs.

Qantas, something to think about.

I think they have already done so.

All my next flights...all discount economy are showing this option.
4 dom flights and the return to JFK.

Upgrade cost is more than normal though for the international flights I think.

Wow. Upgrade from AKL to LAX is only 56,000 for my flight out this week. Dang...wish I had the miles to do it.

And a few minutes ago I felt so special. I only have domestic flights so the offer is of no use to me. Not that I would use QFF points to upgrade anyway. :-| Saving up all QFF points for another 2 Oneworld awards in 2 years time assuming they are still available.

Can you check to see how much they are? 5K? 8K? More?

I received the email several hours ago and tried to upgrade my O class ticket SYD-HKG return next month, but kept getting a message that it was not possible to do due to the conditions of the O class ticket.

Seat counter is showing a mostly empty business cabin on my flight dates.

Tried again ten minutes ago and the requests went through. I'll know on the day whether I get a pointy end seat.

MMMM.. This appears on the Manage your bookings page. Is this usual for an upgrade from economy to business request..

Note: An upgrade to Economy is requested. Status of upgrade will be shown 5 hours before departure.

I just put in for an upgrade to PE from discount economy MEL - LAX and to Business fro discount economy JFK-SYD. I'm lucky I'm travelling at the end of next week.
The points burn seems to be the same as what's listed on the QF website.
