Upgrade to business from economy on N, O or Q

Hmm I wonder ... I don't know if I should. I have the points, 96,000 is more than a return economy to Vancouver ! but I don't think I'll ever have this opportunity again, and I only paid $750 return to New York. What does everyone think?

When you say return to New York, I take it that you are flying Australia-> New York -> Australia. If this is so, I'd personally put my name down for the upgrade on the outbound flight rather than the return inbound. I'd rather try and spend 96K to have a more comfortable start, than have a comfortable return (where I could just go straight to my bed after an awful flight in any case).

But in any case $385 + 96,000 points = SYD-JFK vv. in J, that's a good deal; so go for it.

I'm also tempted to request an upgrade. we are on QF93/107 on 5th of june but i wanted to check if anyone knows whether it is possible to request these upgrades when checking in (or do they have to be done 24 hours beforehand), being WP there might be a slight chance I might get upgraded anyhow as economy looks fairly full.

we are coming back on the 15 june on QF108/26 which goes via Auckland so I am hoping to be able to change to QF94 and save about 6 hours off the trip. I can't tell how full QF94 is but QF26 looks virtually empty so have this dilema of whether better to stick with QF26 and try to get a whole row to myself??

Note that after June the 9th, QF26 between AKL and MEL is operated by a 737.

From QF website:

International Upgrade Awards

If you hold an eligible paid and confirmed ticket for a Qantas operated service with a QF flight number, you can register for an international Flight Upgrade from 90 days to 24 hours before departure from the first port of the flight. Requests for Flight Upgrades will not be accepted within 24 hours of scheduled departure from the port of origin.

So yep, needs to be done at least 24 hours beforehand.

What serfty posted re QF26 AKL-MEL being operated by a 737 from after 9 June is correct...I'd imagine your 71G is just for the LAX-AKL leg.

I got this email the other day as well.

Boring! Although that's only because my only international flights coming up are awards, are Trans-Tasman, or are in J. One is impossible to upgrade full stop, the next is not worth blowing points for an upgrade (unless you had points to burn and/or really felt like you needed a big break - and an expensive way for this to happen), and the last goes without saying....

In any case, this is quite a shake up. I'm sensing all the signs of QF insecurity here....

While QF is at it, I would like them to make it easy and at a reasonable cost to upgrade single sector out of a multi-sector booking, with money (I have quite a lot of points but I do not always want to use them), like the BA website lets you, AND without charging a one-way fare (the extra fares on BA website is usually only about the difference between the apportioned current fares, e.g. if the WT+ return fare is £1000 and CW is £2100, one way paid upgrade from WT+ to CW costs £600, that sort of appropriate level).

I often take advantage of BA's single sector upgrade with money, because I may want to mix classes in my booking for various reasons (day or night flight / different sector length / my own plans etc).

I would also use the facility to deal with the situation where the desired class is not available for the outbound leg but is available for the inbound leg, for instance.

QF would have got quite a lot of extra revenue out of me if they had offered that option. I sometimes telephoned to find out what it costs me to upgrade a single sector and it invariably comes back as one-way fare, making it disproportionately expensive and not worthwhile.

QF is not really doing everything to gain extra revenue, I think!

Very well said

I have had a look at BA website to try this but the PAY for upgrade option is always shaded out for my BA bookings. Any tricks to using this feature?

Can't you book essentially the same flights through BA as codeshares? That way you'd be able to upgrade per sector. Unless the option isn't available unless you're on BA metal...

I don't know whether that would be do-able, but I could try next time.

But not all QF flights are available as BA codeshare, so it doesn't necessarily solve the problem.

In any case, I am not sure what happens if I subsequently want to put in a points upgrade request - surely if I am on a BA ticket on a BA flight number, I can't use the QF points to upgrade even if I am on QF metal, or have I got that wrong?

That's right, you can't.

Just my guess, but it might be a non-upgradable fare. But I can't remember the last time I did not see an option to upgrade, regardless of the fare band my booking was in.

Or, do you happen to have a non-BA sector (or maybe even non-BA-operated sector) within the booking, or have another (possibly non-BA) PNR linked to it?

I once had a booking linked to another PNR that contained a non-BA sector, and pay-to-upgrade option disappeared. As soon as I realised what the problem could be and had the other PNR de-linked from the booking, the option to pay to upgrade returned.

I've never tried the pay-to-upgrade on a codeshare flight - I've only done it with BA-ticketed, BA-operated flight, so I don't know if it would work on codeshare flights.

It's a Qantas issued ticket. Flights are BA on BA. I rarely book Codeshare - it just complicates reservations. Flights are not non-refundable non-upgradeable etc. BUT, there are also QF flights on the same reservation so that's probably it. Also it is a Qantas issued ticket and I have found out that trying to do stuff with flights of airlines who haven't issued the ticket can be tricky.

The simplest thing for airlines (and therefore something that gives you complete functionality is): Ticket issued by same airline whose flight number you are on and whose metal/physical plane you are also on.

I think that could be where the problem is. From what I gather, the BA online paid upgrade only works on tickets booked on BA website, although I stand to be corrected.

It could also be the QF flight in your booking that is complicating it. It was when I linked a PNR with QF flight to my BA.com booked BA ticket that online paid upgrade option got greyed out (and as soon as I had it de-linked, the option came back).

I agree there.

You can upgrade a segment on QF from L to T (where available) for $1200 (used to be $900 iirc).

Im trying to do an upgrade and the Qantas website when i click on the upgrade link keeps popping up saying that the site is experiencing difficultues and to try again later..

I now have "Flight 3" for the return, it says :

Note: Your upgrade from New York to Sydney has been declined.

Status: Waitlisted

Upgrade status: Declined

Class: Business (U)

Flight Duration: 22h 15m

.... does this mean there could still be a chance?

TG can you please check seats again for QF108 on 30 May please :)
