Hmm I wonder ... I don't know if I should. I have the points, 96,000 is more than a return economy to Vancouver ! but I don't think I'll ever have this opportunity again, and I only paid $750 return to New York. What does everyone think?
When you say return to New York, I take it that you are flying Australia-> New York -> Australia. If this is so, I'd personally put my name down for the upgrade on the outbound flight rather than the return inbound. I'd rather try and spend 96K to have a more comfortable start, than have a comfortable return (where I could just go straight to my bed after an awful flight in any case).
But in any case $385 + 96,000 points = SYD-JFK vv. in J, that's a good deal; so go for it.
