If your screen still says the same thing 6 hours before your plane is due to take off it means that you haven't got your upgrade.

If around the 12-18 hour before the flight takesoff mark this changes and the whole declined message disappears it means you have got your upgrade!

It's my first int'l upg request, so hmm! :) hopeful but I won't be bummed if I don't get it. Overnight flight ..

To me it looks like it has cleared, but plug it into www.checkmytrip.com and you will have a better idea of whether or not this is no. Note the QF website is very buggy in terms of how it displays.......

Given it's more than 24 hours out, I guess that's just showing still as being waitlisted.

Your chances of getting that upgrade are quite good.

(Not guaranteed, but ok).

With www.checkmytrip.com ; you see a waitlisted business class segment. www.qantas.com/yourbooking "sees" this too and a software issue makes it decide to show your upgrade as being declined, when in fact it may not have not been fully processed yet.

If you upgrade comes through, thus will become confirmed and the segment entry with the original booked class will disappear. At which point in time www.qantas.com.au/yourbooking will show as confirmed.

If your upgrade does not come through it will continue to show declined even after you fly the segment ...

I've had a few people tell me to cancel it because it's a night flight and it's not really worth it ... thoughts from anyone who has done this flight please? :) Last March I flew SFO-SYD and I did PE (free upgrade) and that was nice but I slept most of the way ...

Since you are travelling from JFK to SYD there are two sectors.

  1. The JFK-LAX segment is an evening dinner flight and should be quite enjoyable in J - watch a movie or two.
  2. The LAX-SYD segment is 12+ hours:
    • have supper and watch another movie or ¾.
    • After 2½ hours try to sleep for the next 7.
    • They will wake you for breakfast around 2 hours before the flight is due to land in SYD.

I personally prefer to fly J on the long overnight flights. You get a good meal and some nice wine, and then a decent bed you can actually get some sleep in. And thus arrive feeling much fresher.

Its a 9900 mile journey from JFK-SYD and if that's not worth upgrading, then no flight is imo ; its only a few hundred miles less than LHR-SYD. The journey time ( including time in LAX) is over 22 hours

Without a doubt go for the upgrade on the overnight flight, you will appreciate the extra room for sleeping etc, and be fresher on arrival in SYD

With the first leg, a chance just to sit back and enjoy the J service and food.

Thanks everyone :) I will leave the request and see how we go ... back to Toronto tonight (camping in a RV) then flight is tomorrow, first segment LAN from YYZ-JFK.

Congratulations - the points are painful but it's worth it, SWMBO and I did QF107 to JFK last year - points cost 192K:shock:

QF108 is the better value IMHO.

Seat map show downstairs J as almost empty ... My fave seat is 23D (which is currently free - with no-one in 23 E)

Some argue that day flights are better to upgrade so you can enjoy the service.
I would say night flights are just as if so not more important so you can sleep, unless you have a day at home to sleep afterward then maybe not as much reason but generally i prefer to sleep on the plane and not the whole day in bed when i could be doing something else.
