Upgrade to business from economy on N, O or Q

Some argue that day flights are better to upgrade so you can enjoy the service.
I would say night flights are just as if so not more important so you can sleep, unless you have a day at home to sleep afterward then maybe not as much reason but generally i prefer to sleep on the plane and not the whole day in bed when i could be doing something else.

I generally prioritise my sleep - whether that's day or night! I rarely get enough sleep when I'm on the ground, so being on an aeroplane is a great way of getting adequate sleep (and hoping for no disruption by noisy passengers) Being on an aeroplane was a huge relief when I was a Blackberry slave.

I would say that it's the matter of your priority - whether you like your sleep (then upgrade night flights, or all flights!), or whether you like the service/drinking (then upgrade day flights).

Some may also say i am addicted to my email and notebook :)

Some may say I am a travel slave. I seem to travel about half of each month (and that's not for work!) They could also say I am addicted to avoiding economy class travel.

In the specific case of QF107 over QF108, it's quite a long journey.

QF107 spans 1¼ siderial* days while QF108, ½.

For SYD-JFK it's firstly a late morning lunchtime/dinner flight with a significant sleep period to follow then breakfast into LAX, This is then followed by a 3½ hour morning to evening day flight with a light lunch - you land in JFK early evening with the remainder of the evening ahead of you.

To contrast, JFK-SYD is an evening departure with dinner over a 4 hour flight to LAX. From there you get supper, sleep then breakfast, hopefully waking refreshed to face a new day.

These circumstances are even more contrasting if you like an alcoholic drink or four (or more) ... ;)

*Siderial Day: In this context it means the perceived sunrise/sunset/day/night pattern in relation to the flight. When a flight "Follows" the sum (like QF108) the rate of progression of the sun in relation to the flight is less than normal. Conversely, flying against the sun incurs a greater rate.

My view is that if booked in economy, then I would prefer to upgrade an overnight flight in preference to a daytime flight. Much better sleeping in a business class seat.

If booked in business class then I would prefer to upgrade a daytime flight over a night time flight. Sleeping is not greatly improved i First, but the meals, drinks, and overall service is best enjoyed when awake.

Anyone else having trouble accessing the upgrade part of their booking? I haven't been able to get in since Saturday. Keep getting

Isn't it great to be able to sleep comfortably in a WHY seat?

If I am in an exit row and not stuck behind serial recliners my only concern on a long haul flight would be how quickly the time passes while I am awake....

Yep! Reports on FT indicate it's possible to call Qantas and submit your request.

Note, this "promotion" finishes today ...

Correct - I had to do that for one of my flights, because of the same online error.

You need to explain that there seems to be a system error online, and they will do it for you.

If I am in an exit row and not stuck behind serial recliners

I don't mind if the person in front of me reclines in dreaded whY, as long as I am not trying to eat.

Not that I often have a seat in front on me on a long haul flight, but I really couldn't care less.

What I do HATE is the seat kicker behind me. They drive me absolutely batty, so much so that I almost got tempted to book the rearmost row  I can sleep with a person reclining in front of me (or pretty much do anything else) but I can't sleep if someone is kicking my seat

Before anyone asks, I don't recline my seat if I am awake, and I don't even recline much to go to sleep (I usually stuff a pillow behind my lower back to create a recline if I'm in the exit row) - maybe just a tiny bit so I'm not completely vertical but often not at all, so the reason for the serial seat kicking is not my reclined seat. It's usually bored, unruly children that parents are not sufficiently controlling.

That's one of the advantages of travelling in business class. You don't really get seat kickers (too far for children to kick, I guess).

I am not holding much hope for an upgrade for one of my flights as the first and business only have one seat each left, with lots of cheap seats left in economy. However, I have had a points upgrade declined only to find being op-uped, so I guess I would never know.

Hi TG,

Would it be possible for you to check QF15 (BNE-LAX) on 24 June and QF12 (LAX-SYD) on 1 July, please?

Thank you so much in advance for this.

Experienced the same when I tried to make an upgrade request on QF15. I gave QF a call and they put it in for me.

And that is how we are all different. It doesn't bother me what the person behind does during the flight. What bothers me the most is the serial recliner.

Sometimes I have to sit upright, almost leaning forward a few inches from the seat back, while I am awake as it gets very uncomfortable if I lean back for too long. If there is a serial recliner in front then that does not leave me a lot of room and I am then forced to slightly recline to get some room in front me again and makes the flight very uncomfortable. Can't wait to try out the new shell seats at least that will take care of the serial recliner....

Obviously these inconsiderate oafs do not realise they have a passenger as important as yourself behind them. Perhaps you should get some platinum coloured cards printed that you can discretely pass to the person in front to make sure they are aware of the august company they are in and therefore behave appropriately

Amazing! I don't think I ever said I was important. I accept that there will be serial recliners on a flight, and some of these people recline just because they can not because they need to recline, which is one the reasons I have status and try to get exit row pre-allocated all the time.

From memory someone mentioned that the new shell seats do not recline back but rather slide back and forward into the seat. To me that will mean that status is not so important anymore and I can have a comfortable flight and not worry about serial recliners....

You'll need to travel CX for that.

The new CX WHY seats slide forward with no backward movement into the space in front of the PAX immediately behind.

Qantas have gone for a hybrid with the 388 WHY seating - the base of the seat slides forward around 10cm and the back does indeed recline; albeit a little less than that of the seat in the 744's.

I don't know why people get so upset when someone reclines in front them. They have paid for a ticket and have every right to recline.

If you don't like it, buy a ticket in a higher class where the impact of recline is far less. Otherwise, put a sock in it and respect others' rights. For crying out loud, you're flying economy, what do you expect?? There's a reason why Economy cabin class is called 'Economy'.

As good as the concept sounds I don't think I will be flying CX WHY again in a hurry.

Something is better than nothing.

I wonder if SQ's New Economy Class is as good as it looks? I will get to try out both the A380 and B777-300ER over Christmas/New Year period...
