Been following AFF for a little while but posting for the first time - hello everyone. I wonder whether anyone knows how likely I am to get an upgrade on QF using points at the moment? I'm a Silver QFF flying SYD to LHR on August 6 and was considering buying an upgradable fare but have had mixed luck in the past. Any way I can find out?

As you are just a Silver, Golds, Platinums and Chairmans Lounge members will all get first pick ahead of you. So it’s not terribly likely, but you’re not on the bottom rung.

Just as samh004 said. At least you'll know ~ 24 hours before flying whether your upgrade has come through.

ie no hope of an upgrade to J.

Maybe could get an upgrade. However, unlikely as getting in late to the party, near-last in the status stakes, and fare class likely to be amongst the lowest if you're buying the cheapest upgradeable fare (and also behind all the W tickets).

I beg to differ, J0 means no hope, an upgradable fare can be very few $$ more if you use a travel agent that understands the fare buckets, there could be 20-30 seats available and for all we no there might be no upgrade requests in the system, it really is a lottery, especially given the info we have available often reflects fare buckets for sale in NA.

Apologies. Misread the numbers! I thought (in my addled state) it was J0 I0 D0. As it is J9 I9, chances are indeed better. Sorry!

Looks kinda full on the seatmap:(

You never know your luck, I once had a request in as a SG for BNE-SIN with J1 showing, and got it! The gods were smiling that day!

You need to look at the price difference between an upgradable fare and then balance the cost versus the likely hood of the upgrade.

From the numbers the chances are reasonable BUT as we all know the Yield Management gurus work in a dark strange world :!:

if its any consolation I have had a double points up y>j (requested y+ and y+ deducted) on <deleted> QF A380 as a QP NB.
Silver may help your cause.
Depends on the flight really, weigh in extra cost vs dissapointment, only advantage of no upgrade and extra $$ paid MAY be more flexible conditions.
No genius is yet to decipher QFs upgrade lotto system.

How did you get that seatmap? I try through checkmytrip and it advises that they do not have one for my aircraft (scheduled to be a380)

Keeping that in mind for international fares also, red e-deals which are the cheapest are often upgradeable... (not so the case for domestic fares).

Happy to send you any others if you need them.

Depends what you mean by full. Remember the X are Q blocks, not allocated, so I count 45 seats empty out of a total of 72, so still more empty than allocated.

The large number of I class (discount Business) also indicates that QF yield management don't believe there is a huge demand for the full price J to fill the cabin, (so are not expecting a huge last minute rush).

Agree. It's over 62% empty at present (or unallocated seats).

Looking pretty good at present IMHO, but of course, QF have been known to decline upgrades and still fly with empty J seats.

Are you requesting a Y+ upgrade as well ? Remember that Y+ peoplewanting to upgrade to J will also free up seats in Y+.

IIRC, when I requested J upgrades last year SYD-LAX, the QF system had a note that a Y+ upgrade request was automatically included if there were no J seats available.
