Upgrade to Business using points on QF

IIRC, when I requested J upgrades last year SYD-LAX, the QF system had a note that a Y+ upgrade request was automatically included if there were no J seats available.

That is a selection. If requesting an upgrade to business , you can ask for PE as the alternative if business is unavailable. It is not automatically included though

(if the solid blocks are filled seats)?

Not all the solid blocks are filled seats. The solid blocks are not available for allocation. Those with a white X in them are "Q blocked", meaning they are not allocated, but they are not available to whoever is accessing the GDS. Expertflyer will return different maps depending on the status of any FF number entered - NB and WP will see different QBlocks.

The chance of lower status member getting an upgrade are usually minimal. It boils down to whether or not you are prepared to fly in economy if the upgrade doesn't happen. I'm not, so have always used points for the full business class (even first class) ticket, when available.

Thanks deegee and welcome to AFF.

Thanks for all the advice. Was able to get upgradable ticket only $185 more than N, O Q class so happy to take that risk. Could always try to upgrade to PY if J-class not available. Will let you know how I get on.
