Upgrade to Gold with just 480 credits ?

Hi AFF Members,

I was wondering how generous VA are with status upgrades to Gold, I have earned 480 status credits, do you think this means gold ? Why I have the question, well, I was given silver status with just 210 credits as opposed to 250

Advantages - have to make a trip to India with SQ in the coming month, and a status of gold prior to travel would mean a better travel experience

It was only recently that silver went to 250. Before that it was 200. Having said that, consensus seems to be that early status upgrades do occur from time to time.

If it's any use, I went from Silver to Gold yesterday with 490 status credits, but later yesterday Monday's flight put me up to 530, but the gold was awarded before those points were posted though.

As TirEoghain demonstrated, upgrades when 5-10SC from the qualifying level seem to occur a fair bit. 20 may be a little too optimistic... Good luck though!

There's always the option of a happy hour fare status run; or a pay one (20 SC) direction, points the other trip. Depending on what monetary value you put on priority check-in/boarding and lounge access, of course.

A cheap flight in Aus is the last resort. At one stage, upgrade just before I fly to India means longer validity period for Gold but then a quicker gold means early happiness

I was also upgraded from silver to gold at 490SC. It happened 4 days before Sabre went live and I did have a status run booked to get me the missing 10 SCs - of course these didn't post until weeks after the date I needed them by so it was just as well I was preemptively upgraded! I did wonder if this was by design.

Given you only need 20 SC, I'd be doing a cheap return trip (eg SYD-MEL) for cash or even a points redemption (given points redemptions earn SCs now because that gets you exactly the number of SCs you need. If you for example earn 40 SCs but only need 20 to qualify for Gold, you will lose the extra 20 for ever when they assess your level. If you however earn exactly what you need to achieve Gold, your SCs you'll earn going to India will all count for next year.

My daughter is at 700 points to re-qualify for platinum. She has 90 points coming to her from a retro claim from about 3 weeks ago which still leaves her 10 short. Her anniversary date is 23rd May so we have advised her to do a quick trip to to either of the grandparents to make sure she gets over the mark. (either ADL or OOL) If her retro doesn't come through by her anniversary date then I hope Velocity will honour her status.

Not sure how you are getting to India. Just from my experience with SQ, and coming out of Bangalore - lounge access is a bit of hit and miss. Sometimes I get it with my VA gold card, other times have not. Like all things in Bangalore there is a reason I'm yet to figure out

Don't they offer this thing called Pilot gold now where they give you a gold membership, minus a few bells and whistles for three months and you have to gt an additional 80 SC?

Good news.... my daughter's points posted today, just 4 weeks exactly to the day after she sent in the retro claim. Only 10 to go before the 23rd May.

I can't remember if I was upgraded at 480 or 490, but it was just south of the mark. That being said this was during the Sabre transition and I had ~40SCs 'lost in the system' at the time that I was trying to get VA to sort out at the time, so in reality I'd already made the cut-off and this could have been why I was bumped.

Same thing happened to me. Not that I didn't want the upgrade, but it wasn't well timed for me. Generally my main travel period (o/s travel) tends to be Sept-Oct. When I came back from the US in Sept 2012, VA generously gave me some bonus SC's that pushed me over to SG. I already had it mapped out for a December trip to get me to SG, thereby ensuring my SG benefits for the following year to December 2013. As it turned out, the December 2012 trip plus a few gratuitous runs meant I ended up WP! Well played VA.

I wonder if you can ask to be downgraded, given the rules are clear are you want to abide by them I would doubt its an issue. The not so good side of a requal date that can change.
