Booked a cheap return ticket to MEL last weekend, travelling on QF 2 to MEL and QF 3 back to SYD. Before the number of points required for an upgrade increased on 1 January 2004, I used 5000 points to upgrade to Business class on QF3 back to SYD. Consequently, after checking in for the flight home, I was further upgraded to the First Class cabin on QF3 :D

Two questions:
1. On an upgrade such as mine, am I entitled to receive points for First class, business class or just economy (because that is what my original booking was in)??

2. Do they count first class as business class on domestic sectors of international flights such as MEL/SYD on QF3??

This is the first time I have (a) used points to upgrade and (b) been optionally upgraded ... so am a little unsure of what happens with my points :?

You will get the points for the travel you have paid for, so steerage in this case. As far as how they treat the F cabin, F fares are the same as J fares on SYD-MEL, so my guess is that they don't actually have an F fare and just sell the F cabin for J fares - if your ticket says F you get an F seat (and more importantly, F service and F lounge).
