Upgrades for platinum on international flights

I don't fly much but my first and only op-up came on BA15 SIN-SYD last October. My girlfriend and I were on separate tickets and we both had obtained WP a few days prior to this flight. At the boarding gate, my card wouldn't scan and after some looking at the computer I got assigned a J seat, and a minute later the exact thing happened to my girlfriend and she also got a J seat. We paid around $350AUD for this flight (well $700 return ex-SIN to be exact) so we were happy flyers.

And because of that flight, next week 9/5/11 I have chosen to fly BA15 again over QF6 and QF32 in hope that the lucky op-up gods are busy at work upgrading passengers! ;) 8 days out from the flight and I can select any seat in economy except for a block of 12 seats (very last 4 rows x 3 middle seats). Serfty points out that its a light load and that I might get a whole row to myself but I hope he's incorrect ;) and everyone in economy gets moved to business class  . EF currently still shows 9's across every single fare class.

I'm only SG status, but have been upgraded twice this year on BA9/QF302 BKK-SYD. Coming back last week, I had booked an exit seat in Y, was upgraded to 13J on check in, then to 62A (upper-deck) at the gate. Have to say that 62A is a great seat, felt like I was in my own little world the entire flight

Seems there may be some merit in chosing codeshare flights over QF operated if there's a choice. QF2 (I think ??) leaves around the same time as BA9, BKK-SYD, and I have never had an op-up, admittedly have only ever flown it coming back from Europe so I'm not sure if that makes a difference..

Surprisingly, as others have said, BA offers for upgrades have been more forthcoming! I can't request upgrades from them, but in the past 2 years, no need to - I've been upgraded on the 3 flights I've taken with them, 1 including my partner who is only Bronze (which totally surprised me!).

Due for another BA trip in June - have requested an exit row in anticipation of a long trip in Y; will have to see how it goes - I'm not WP any more, fell to Gold, but maybe I'll get lucky. . . . :)

Does anyone ever get upgraded J to F on QF long haul flights? I am platinum and mainly fly J.

Also, for those who have used points to upgrade to F, is it worth it? I have never flown F and am pretty happy with J. I don't drink alchohol when I fly so the French plonk doesnt mean anything for me ;)

If you are happy eith flying in J - and I must admit, on the A380 J is not bad at all - then probably not worth the 60,000 points tp upgrade J to F on the SYD-LHR run, for instance.

Apart from the bubbly - which I drink in moderatrion when flying - then biggest draw card for me includes: the quiet of the F section, the lambswool underlay and doona on top i.e. the ability to get a decent nights sleep and so be fit and alert when getting to the end of 22 hrs in the air.

And, as platinum, when buying a J ticket you get back almost 50% of the points spent on your upgrade to boot!

thanks for the tips!

actually i am yet to fly the A380 - the last time i was due to fly the 380 was back from LHR to SIN around november and it was 2 days before the engine blew up - I was one of the passengers who had to get shifted to a BA 777....

very keen to see the difference between 747 J and 380 J...
