Upgrading biz class on the spot

I already bought my ticket from MAS (biz class KUL - MEL) and my mom suddenly want to follow me, which im alright.. and i went ahead to purchase a normal economy ticket without realizing i had a Biz class ticket, im just wondering will it be cheaper to upgrade (paying cash/CC not points) now or when we are nearer to the flying date or even at the counter during check in ?

Did called MAS and they quoted me about RM4500 if I want to upgrade now, but cant give me an answer if i were to upgrade during check in.

Anyone can share your experience ?

The risk you run of trying to upgrade at checkin is the fact that all seats in business may be gone by the time you get to the airport.

Have you tried upgrading the booking online to see how much it costs? Otherwise I'm not sure these days about MH and ODU's

MAS bookings cant be 'managed' online anymore, thats what i've been told by them recently, as I cant even find my bookings online..
which is why i called and asked for the upgrade price and quoted about RM 4500.. the date im travelling will not be a peak period, so im guessing will ODU be cheaper ?

MAS are not really known for doing ODUs at check-in and I agree that you run the risk of being on a flight with a full business class, which means you can't even upgrade. What class of economy ticket was it? If it's an upgradeable ticket (MHsmart or MHflex), I would suggest calling the Enrich call centre and use points to upgrade you mum's ticket. That way, you'll also save some money.

Otherwise you run the risk of the cabin being full.
