I was just looking at my bookings which includes NRT-JFK in D class. In the table it says it is eligible for an upgrade award.
Is it possible to book an upgrade award before ticketing, or like QF, do you need to wait until after ticketing?
And if the upgrade comes through, will it post to QF as F class or D?
Thx

If you have the AA points/eVIPs and there is availability in A class ( which there often is ) then you can nab the upgrade now, otherwise you can waitlist for it

It will post to QF as business class

Thanks dave.. I certainly will nab it now! Especially as EF shows A1. Not knowing whether I'll get the NGBC on the flight to JFK or not, it will be nice that I can get a good sleep no matter which aircraft we have...

update... oops - My current ticket is on QF ticket stock.. oh well - I guess I can always look at having it reissued by AA while I'm in Tokyo and try again - IF there's any A class left by then!

You may well be able to request this upgrade now but you will need to get the ticket reissued by AA before the flight

I have a query on UpgrAAding AA flights using AAdvantage points.

(Background, I am looking at doing a LONE4  in June for myself and mrs serfty and would want to upgrade as many segments on QF and AA as possible.)

I have done some research and there is plenty of information of FT and here about upgrading on AA, but it mainly relates to elites - I'm looking at lowly 'non-statused' AAdvantage Mile upgrades.

Domestically in the US the following is what I can glean:
  • Ticket must be on AA ticket stock (001- ...)
  • 15,000 AAdvatange points are required for each one-way upgrade
  • Such one-way upgrade can be on up to consecutive 3 AA segments as long as no port us utilised more than once (e.g. return to origin). (sample routes: SFO-DFW-ORD-JFK & SFO-LAX-DFW-SEA)
  • Ensure you book flights showing A availability, A7 is good! (2 Class US domestic only)
  • As soon as ticketed, request that upgrade!
Can someone please comment on this and correct/confirm/add to this information.

(1) Correct
(2) Correct for L class
(3) Partially correct.

You can upgrade 3 consecutive sectors as long as you dont do A-B-C-B
You can upgrade 3 sectors which are not consecutive as long as the flights are in the same direction

Note: Continental US to/from Hawaii has a $150 co-pay on the award

Thanks Dave:
(1)All the more reason to use AA to plate the ticket. (As if I needed another)
(2)LHONE4's ahoy ...
(3)Better than I thought ...

Now to garner the AAdvantage points ...

Oh Yes, I forgot to mention that:

same direction[/b]

Dave

Is there a definitive definition of "same direction". They pulled 2 eVIPs for my last trip:

nrt-dfw-lga,lhr - which is all travelling east with a little diversion a tad south.

My next trip they said they were taking just one eVIP for:

nrt-ord-lga,jfk-lhr

To me they look ostensibly the same but I cant work out why to other people they are obviously different.

The only itineray that I see as being in the same direction would be something like:

lax-jfk-lhr

Is there a page on AA.com that spells this out?

S

Maybe Dave Noble was referring to transits in relation to consecutive sectors.

LGA/JFK (& EWR) are co-ports of NYC and are considered the same port in this resepect.

I am sure in the past there has been mention of it not being restricted to tansits - it wass all down to the direction of travel.

When upgrading from business to 1st, there are less opportunities for contiguous sectors to be upgraded

if you were to do NRT-LAX-JFK-LHR , you should be ok with a single eVIP from business to 1st since the sectors are contiguous and are 3 class; whether you have a stopover is irrelevent

With many other business-1st upgrades, there is a bigger risk of needing 2 evips since there are few opportunites to do business-1st and so then you need to consider the direction of travel. The precise details of exactly what constitutes same direction I am not sure

with upgrades from economy, it is easy to get 3 contiguous sectors upgraded ( e.g NRT-DFW-ORD-LHR or HNL-ORD-MIA-LHR )
