I'm a firm believer that it's not about the size of your points, it's how you use them.

Exactly, a point has no value until it's used... How much will 100million AN points buy you these days?

I don't even get close to even some of the modest numbers quoted here. As soon as I have enough for a J upgrade that's what I'll do...

There is a consultant based in NZ, whose business is to travel to factories in Europe/Asia and test equipment for Aus/NZ based clients. His clients always pay business class airfares. He trips away about two - three times a month. He has accumulated 15 million if FF points. He never spends them as he always flies business class anyway, and he is paid well enough to not use the points elsewhere.

He doesn't collect points on CC either. His other colleagues in the industry (very small circle) are all similar to him with heaps of points.

When I met him, I realised that there must be tens of thousands of people with tens of millions of points (think movie stars) who just don't care about the points.

Anyway, I'm interested to know what's the highest balance you've ever accumulated at any one point in time. ...

My peak will have been about 3.8 ish million spread across a number of programs.

Am trying to spend (ie two family trips per year)...but am limited by how much leave one can have in a year. I am however redeeming each time for a family of 5 mainly for long haul J travel. So that makes for big bites.

I don't see the point however in just redeeming on anything just to burn points due to having built a nice balance.

ie in recent years have switched to SQ rather than QF as J trips are so much better value on Savers or *A J's.

I am aware however that devaluations may occur, or that airlines may cease trading (I was lucking to redeem 500,000 points from Ansett on 5 Y returns to Cairo on SQ two weeks before Ansett went belly up!!).

So that means I am not currently collecting any of the cheap buy point deals such as US Aiways, or even a credit card for QF to get 15,000 points for $89. However if I can get the Amex Charge Card for $600 with 75K, that might be too good a deal to not grab given I need TI that covers FF flights and the other benefits such as a free flight etc.

So I will continue to grab grab any free, or near free bonii going.....with the aim of keeping my current redemptions in J as a permanent habit.;)

Not sure my 3 daughters my be too keen to leave what has become a very comfortble FF nest in a few years time when they are a bit older, and when my stash of points has been whittled down a fair bit, and trips wil mainly become just for my wife and I.
