Last time I tried to use my Citibank ATM card in a US airport I think it was DFW and I recall that there was only one bank that had ATMs there (Bank of America) and for some reason my ATM card didn't work with them. Or maybe there was a high fee so I didn't use it.

I'll be landing at MIA and would be looking to get some cash and it appears that its only BoA also (but that's not certain). Can anyone comment?

I will be taking some with me but will need to stock up a few $'00 when I get there. I will have WISE and NAB debit (formerly Citi).

I reckon every US airport has BoA ATMs throughout (rarely others!) and yes, they’ll charge a huge fee on most if not all Oz cards.

Alas, there is more rocking horse poop in the US than fee free ATMs these days. Whilst you can kind of get by in post COVID US using card in most places, cash and cash tipping is still wide spread...

I was going to say the exact opposite! Have just come back from a couple of trips to California, including LA, San Fran, Las Vegas and some trips to the country side… i don’t think we used cash at all! Even for tiny purchases of a dollar or two we carded it.

Yes, tipping is everywhere…including takeaway now :( but you can select ‘0’ tip - which we did for takeaway places.

Travel each year for a few months to the US. Credit card widely accepted. Carry small cash denominations for tipping obtained before leaving Australia as ATM's do not issue $1 notes. Visited a pumpkin farm before halloween which only took cash so there is the odd exception.

Thanks all; my need for a few US$'00 in cash is absolute, not a matter of choice between that or card. So thanks @SYD I might have to suck the fee up. I don't get to where I'll need the cash for about 2 weeks into my trip and don't want to carry that much folding around for that long.

BoM ought to work but the fee will be around US$4 to $5.

I agree, it is possible to go cashless however, on last recent visits still managed to find cash only places! Bars are generally a PITA. Those restaurant style chits that you write the tip amount (every time you buy a drink). So easier to use cash.

Yes, coffee shops and takeaways usually have those swing around PoS screens that you tap card and select tip. A small “No tip” will tucked away down the bottom below the big “25%” “Suggested” amount.

But at least all those transactions go through on your card as the final amount. EVERYTHING purchased using the chit and write in a manual tip won’t appear correctly in your account until it settles. You just see the pre-tip amount authorised. The settled amount will include tip. Recently we’ve had tips entered higher than written! So keep records in case you need to claim a charge back.

Or get the ING visa/debit card and they refund the fees if you make the $1000 spend and five transactions the month before. This year they've refunded me over $80 in those pesky fees. Exchange rate is good. Wide has good exchange rates but not the refund.

OPs Citi card (now from NAB) will do the same when used as a Debit card (as will UBank, MacBank and a bunch of others). I stick everything I can on 28° MC.

Tapping ING for coffee does help with the monthly 5x transactions however…

It's the only time I shout brother his coffee at the market. He sees the orange and asks me where I'm going next month.

In my case, it’s for tips on board the Silver Moon cruise ship. Not withstanding tips are included in the price, a good whack of money for the crew fund which supports amenities for those below deck as well i’m also happy to give and also I know the room attendant and Butler will work hard and I’m happy to cash tip them again too.

But the point of the thread was really to see if these days if there are a variety of ATMs within USA airports and I’ve seen nothing to suggest that that’s the case beyond Bank of America. So it looks as though I’ll be paying the fee which on the amount withdrawn won’t be a big thing.

I’d double check that. ING withdrew that benefit of atm operator fee refunds this year.
Now ING is a worse product than all it’s competitors
Edit- August last year. So I’d be amazed if you actually saved the $80 you thought you had
From ING fee schedule:
Full fee rebate on the first 5 eligible fee incurring ATM withdrawal transactions made on the account in that month (excludes International ATM operator fees).

I assume you tap twice…? 😉
I should but as we meet every week I just keep it simple. Woolies - I might be known to buy one thing at a time for a bunch of stuff. Fair game I say.

But we are giving you suggestions how to avoid the fee and also not be worried about which atm you need to use, anywhere. Thinking outside the box I'd suggest. 😉

I know. But they still did for me last month. $83 this financial year. And I only used it in Bali for a week. And Bali for a week in July.
