Thanks for all your replies so far. I really appreciate your efforts in helping with my booking! I didn't know about the limit of 4 segments per one way journey. I thought the only restrictions was no more than 10 segments. I was trying to squeeze in a visit to Frankfurt First Class Terminal, but its not that important to me. The stopover in Frankfurt/Geneva is more important as I plan to visit europe and New York during this trip.

Guess its back to the ANA drawing board! :)

I might re-do my itinerary to make it easier on the eye

Option 1:

PER-BKK (TG J)
BKK-ZRH (TG F)
ZRH-FRA (LH J) STOPOVER
FRA-JFK (LH J) DESTINATION
JFK-FRA (LH J)
FRA-ICN (OZ F)
ICN-BKK (OZ J)
BKK-PER (TG J)

Option 2:

PER-BKK (TG J)
BKK-ZRH (TG F)
ZRH-GVA (LX J) STOPOVER
GVA-JFK (LX J) DESTINATION
JFK-FRA (LH J)
FRA-ZRH (LH J)
ZRH-PEK (LX F)
PEK-SIN (SQ J)
SIN-PER (SQ J)

ok... you mean LX j not OZ f for the fra-zrh... but that aside, you won't get the five segments for the way back. again, check the star booking tool to see what they list for FRA-BKK (option 1) and FRA-SIN for option 2.

Hi MEL_Traveller,

You were right, the above listed return itineraries were invalid. I then had a bit more of a play, and after calling US airways to confirm, I got it all ticketed! The lady I got to speak to was very patient and nice. It made my first experience calling US a pleasure. Best of all it only took a total of 30 minutes to call and confirm my flights!

So this is my final itinerary.

Arriving

PER-BKK TG (J)
BKK-ZRH TG (F)
ZRH-GVA LX (J) Stopover
GVA-JFK LX (J) Destination

Departing

JFK-FRA LH (J)
FRA-ICN OZ (F)
ICN-BKK OZ (J)
BKK-PER TG (J)

Total cost: 280k points + $540.10 for 2 people (points cost about $5000)
So in essence, I've paid around $2750 each for J/F flights Perth-Europe-New York Return!

I'm VERY happy with the final result. :p
Thanks for your help MEL_Traveller!

Oh I forgot, with flying OZ F from Frankfurt-Seoul, do I have access to the Frankfurt first class terminal or the first class lounge? I will be stuck in Frankfurt from 5:30am - 7pm at night, so hopefully there will be something my partner and I can do besides shopping in the airport! Is it possible to leave the airport and go to the city and come back in the evening?

excellent - well done! and for the 240K as well.

You won't be able to use the LH F lounge in FRA however as you are outbound on OZ, you will be limited to the Senator Lounge. But I think OZ has better service.

yes you can leave the airport. And certainly the Senator Lounge is no where to spend that amount of time. JFK-FRA will have sloped biz class seats - so depending on how well you think you can sleep on those you may wish to book a hotel for a few hours. Arriving into Frankfurt city at 630am won't be much fun either... maybe find a cheap hotel and get a few hours rest and a shower and then head into the city for a few hours from 11am or so, back at the airport about 5.

Congrats on the booking Pumbaa!

With that long of a transit, I would definitely head into Frankfurt city and have a wonder around. The train takes 20 minutes or so from airport to Central? (or similar) so it's pretty convenient :)

Bought 50K miles on Friday and just had 75K credited to the account. Total 125K in the account with an extra 25K to come

Now to plan the next holiday :)

Sorry to always be bumping this thread for not so useful purposes ;) but a friend of mine booked a ticket and has a name issue.

For example, her full name is, Ms Jane Mary Doe.

When she booked her ticket, she advised her name as Jane M Doe.

Accordingly the tickets now show as MS DOE/JANEM .... rather than MS DOE/JANEMARY

Would this be an issue?

No problem at all. I had the exact same thing with my first name and middle initial written together. Nothing to worry about at all as long as everything is spelt correctly.

Normally not an issue, but you might want to check if travel is to the USA.

Stopping in europe and back via asia is ok, you might run in to a problem if you want to cross both oceans though. YMMV (some have been successful). Routing back via the Pacific might be considered too much backtracking. But no reason why would couldn't go SYD-FRA-NYC-FRA-ICN-SYD.

I'm going to NY in May from Perth via Bangkok and Seoul and coming home via Frankfurt and Bangkok sort of RTW. I assume the routing is legal because you can only fly west-ish of Perth and we are exactly half way around the world?from NY

that seems fine. as long as they've ticketed it you're ok :)

Yup. Even got the confirmation email from US Airways which is a first for me. We got a change in departure time (10 mins) recently so I rang US airways and all is good. Ben at Points Pros sorted it all for me.

Hi all

A bit of a newbie question here.

I want to go away for my 30th with my partner in late Jan/early Feb 2014 (I know its a long way away). Was thinking probably West Coast USA (Im MEL based). I would love to travel J somewhere for once in my life (or even possibly F!!). Its something I would never pay full price for.

By that stage I may just have enough VA FF points for 2 x J MEL-LAX one-way seats. So that leaves the return trip. This US Air idea sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. I know its more than 18 months away so I would be doing nothing more than monitoring this for the rest of the year but would be interested in if you think:

1 - this 100% bonus points deal will come around again? (is it still on now?)
2 - what would be a likely points cost of 2 x J OR F MEL-LAX/SFO or vice-versa and what carriers they might be on. Absolutely any routing is welcome (going via Europe is completely acceptable, especially if its F).
3 - what availability would be like in late Jan/early Feb 2014.
4 - when I should be planning to buy the points and make the booking.
5 - are there any other logical ways to earn decent US Air Miles for a Aus citizen who doesnt travel to the US (other than buying the points).
6 - is there a limit to how many points you can buy (there would be 2 accounts) and do they expire?

Would appreciate any guidance on whether this is a good idea to seriously investigate -I'm trying to wade through the 188 pages here but its a lot of info!

Thanks

US airways rewards are on a return basis. no discount if you book one way.

availability on direct services to the states from Australia will be limited, and very hard on united. your other option is air new Zealand, also hard, and air Canada, also hard.

flying via Asia is generally ok, via Europe too, but F availability is almost non existent on both lufthansa and Swiss these days. business should be ok as lots of options.

the key to booking is to grab seats as soon as they are made available, which is about 330 days prior to departure (but that includes the return, so you need to book exactly 330 days before your return flight).

us has been selling points for the last few years. no guarantees how often or if they will ever have another offer.

max mileage buy is generally 100k per promotion, including any bonuses. you'll need 110k for business and 140 for first.

you can always buy miles for the non bonus price if you need to top up and they don't have a promotion.

there is a promo on now, but your account must be open for 12 days before you can buy. two accounts (that is, one account per passenger)

as for availability in 2014, who knows. it could well be that first class is restricted to each airlines frequent flyer program, leaving business class as the highest available for partners.

I would sign up now. wait for the next promo. buy miles, then buy more miles at the next promo. then look to book in 2013.

there are no other ways to easily earn US miles other than buying them, unless you take part in the annual grand slam offer. you get bonus points, often in the 10s of thousands, by buying products from multiple US partners. this is much easier if you are based in the USA. non USA residents have used the grand slam, but it takes a lot of work. up to you whether or not you'd spend the time.

Thank you so much for your fast response - it is very helpful.

This is definitely something I am going to look into - from what I have read about it it is an exceptional deal because 99% of people flying anywhere do not have the time, knowledge or desire to go through this process to get J or F travel for Y/Y+ prices. Those of us on here who do reap the rewards.

Some specific questions if I could ask you to help me even further:

1. Do points expire?
2. Have you ever seen bonus points for, say, opening an account with a US Air retail partner without making a purchase (if you have a US Air account but not a US mailing address)? Even if it was 1,000 bonus points at a time it would still help as it would mean buying less points for the redemption. Would it be worth spending small amounts of buying ordering things online if they were giving out big points bonuses? I'll investigate the Grand Slam (I have the time!)
3. This is a bit silly, but given I have lots of time before even making a booking, does Air Miles ever have sign-on bonuses just for signing up? Should I wait till they do to open an account? Every bonus points helps!!

This seems like a complicated, highly skilled concept that can result in ridiculous savings - exactly the type of concept I love!

Thanks!
