A US citizen has been charged after he was found to have brought a loaded firearm in his carry-on baggage through Sydney International Airport’s security screening.

The Australian Federal Police were called to the airport on Sunday morning, after a security worker spotted the weapon in the 47-year-old man’s carry-on baggage, after placing the baggage through the airport’s security x-ray machine.

So the screening staff were doing their job competently and detected the breach at the point they were meant to.

Yes, but what was the man doing with a loaded gun in hand luggage? He claims he forgot it was there. So what was he doing carrying it around Sydney in a bag in the first place? Did he acquire the gun in Australia or did he bring it into the country from the USA? If so, was it registered and transported correctly or did he forget he had it in the bag when departing the USA and it was missed in screening? Lots of unknowns here. But good to see that SYD security screening did detect it and took appropriate action. Now its up to the legal process to find the rest of the story.

You would hope that TSA hadn't missed this stateside, you would think their heavy handed approach would at very least lead to low rates of cases slipping through the cracks.

I wouldn't think our strict gun laws would have allowed a US citizen to obtain a gun here, but who knows...

Being Sunday morning is more likley on arrival into AU, as morning are when most USA flights arrive. Departures in afternoon.
But for me been a long time since I have had incoming bags go through the security x-ray machine. For non citizens they may get more searches/checks.

I suspect tsa missed it outbound, they arent always as thorough as people think, or he acquired it illegally here as you cant legally buy a gun in Australia without a permit and they dont issue permits for tourists.

And it's difficult and time consuming to get one for a handgun anyway.
