I had a thread up before about USA in July but I'm now looking at going in August 2012. I'd really like to go J even just one way as I have almost 900,000 points that have not been touched since I started accumulating. I'm flexible with dates anytime in August and I don't mind leaving from Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane. So far I'm having a hard time finding anything Business Class!

One option is to go CX MEL-HKG-LAX J class - a much longer trip but I've never been with CX, so is it worth it?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

For sure, known for excellent cabin service and the aircraft out of SYD or MEL have new upgraded j seats, can't go wrong IMO.

Hard to find J Award seats OZ to USA unless 10mths to a year out.

We snagged 2 for AUG 12th back 29th in J but have to come back via AKL, have since setup Expert Flyer to advise if any come to market LAX/OZ direct.

If you are thinking QF / One World you would normally want to book out 353 days and back 353 days from date of flightsto get J or First.
Because you have heaps of time start running up points on Star Alliance as you can get ticketed just days out from travel date.
We use most of our QF points for JASAs in Australia or by booking the 353 day method for long haul.
Cathay has a pretty good reputation so that first idea could work for you even though it is more points.

What are your dates and where do you need to fly in the US. There is F available from SYD-LAX on 31/7 if that's not too early. Are you happy to consider flying via AKL? Is it one seat or more?

I'm pretty flexible with dates. I'm really think the idea of doing MEL-HKG-LAX is the way to go! The other option is to go A330 through AKL but I'd prefer 747, 777 or A380 if I can.

I see there is a few First Class seats still left on CX HKG-LAX. I've never been First Class before (Business Class a few times) so may have to look into it!

If you're going to spend some long saved points might as well try going to HKG on QF 388 F ... and then onto LAX/JFK with CX F :p
