Is $2500 about the norm for Syd-LAX, NewYork -Syd June-July?

Yes - JFK (and YYZ) are premium destinations, and you can expect around $700 odd in premium on top of a normal SYD-LAX flight. So that's about right - especially for June/July which is peak season.

There are specials from time to time, and others have suggested suitable alternatives.

But for QF - normal.

Los Angeles is pretty huge compared to AU cities. Unless you and your daughter have specific sights to see, I would suggest you are better off spending time elswhere.
New York is an interesting place. I would reccomend at least a week there. Visit downtown, take the ferry to Staten Island, walk through Central Park and visit Times Square.

Take the subway. You haven't experienced New York until you've had a subway pull up in front of you and you hop on and think, "I'm catching a NY subway".

I would recommend the Amtrac between NY and Washington. Much easier.
