I'm looking to take my family of 5 to Fiji using QF points. Given there are only one or two direct flights a week out of MEL it's not a huge window of opportunity.

My question is if I book the flight there as soon as they become available, is it pot luck booking a flight home a week and a half later (using frequent flyer points) given I won't be able to do this for one month after booking flight there?

I'd probably wait a bit longer till you had enough points to book both legs, and do it in one hit. That way you won't get caught out if there aren't return flights.

Cheers,

Nick

Or be willing to fork out for the return flights if necessary.

One would think that if FF flights were available in one direction they would be available in the other direction. Or should I be cynical as always with this :?:

Hi Nick

Not a question of points. I may have phrased my question poorly.

I have plenty of points but as the return leg is a new month, I can't use the points to book until they are published online

Star70,

I read it the way you meant but it really does not change the answers. I gather you are talking about 12 months time.

You just have to weigh up the risk as you see it.

I'd wait. I've been looking at award flights to Fiji next year and there seems to be plenty there.

I know how you feel. I'm in the same situation for a 2009 USA trip, & need Business Class for a family of 4.
We monitored the QF site daily for a couple of mths, to get a feel for availability (both ways). We have now booked the flight out, & are waiting to book the return (we decided to take the chance & pay for a Return trip if necessary)
.... Dont forget, you can phone QF and ask them to release extra-seats on a particular flight, but you are then up for a booking fee of 2500 points per person if you use their phone-operators.... Good luck whatever you decide!

witsend,

This only works for Platinum FFers.
