Using QFF points to upgrade on CX

Hi,

I am flying CX in a few days on an L fare(unsure if thats good), is it possible to use QFF points to upgrade from economy to PE or Business?

I did a bit of searching but its all a bit confusing.

Friends just returned from CX flights. He has status with Qantas (SG or WP) and CX either upgraded them on every sector or gave them a row to themselves if no upgrade available. Maybe you might be lucky?

He might get a complimentary upgrade but CANNOT upgrade using QFF.

Can you not do this because of the fare class or are you not able to do it on any fare class?

Sadly I don't have any status so I doubt I'll get any upgrade for free.

It can't be done on any fare class. You can't use QFF points to upgrade on CX.

I think it's just "the rules". We learnt from our experience too.

In general you can't upgrade on another oneworld/partner airline, even with a QF flight number (which can confuse people).
It seems Star Alliance is slightly ahead in this regard as they do offer, from very high fare classes (eg: Y/B type) upgrades between carriers, or some of them (and UA has a relationship with LH going back years that allowed upgrades using each's miles, which worked... mostly)... in this regard OW and QF is quite behind.

So in general you need an aircraft operated by QF with a QF flight number to upgrade with QFF.

Sorry these are not the droids... I mean answers... you're looking for.

While the QFF upgrade restriction to both QF flight numbers and QF metal might be disappointing for some, would we be happy if members of other OneWorld FF programs could use their points for upgrades on QF flights? I recall AFF threads from a fews years ago with comments that QF should satisfy their own FF members first before accommodating other OW program members. So, the extension of this thinking is CX and other OW airlines should adopt a similar policy.

Agree with that sentiment.

I think it's also a technical issue. I mean why should CX, for example, give QF that much access to their inventory? Sure, requests could go through for the appropriate fare classes etc, but I am thinking each carrier probably does not want that much visibility over their inventory. Remember, in ways, QF and it's partners still compete on various routes, so it's in each carriers interests to have a certain level of opaqueness to each other (there may even be laws around this in some places, I am not certain).

Either way, while on the one hand it seems unfriendly to consumers, if you opened up to your partners it just massively increases the demand until only your mega top tiers get a chance at a scarce number of seats. I tend to agree with the current system.

There is one way. Cash in your QF points for woolworths/fuel/David Jones etc vouchers. Sell the vouchers on ebay for cash. Use the cash to change your CX fare to business class :shock:

Row to yourself is a good thing to aim for.
I can say so as on the 737, (threadjack) on my QFd flight today, a pretty full flight, I had a whole 26A-C to myself.
Not sure if its because I am now QF SG, or it was just by chance.
Yah, just ask, all they can say is no, or wink wink, magically it happens.

You asked for an upgrade? You do realise that most check-in agents frown upon people asking. Be careful one day you don't instead receive a downgrade to your carefully selected economy seat.
