My wife and I have an upcoming flight SYD-SIN-HKT on SQ (Y). We have booked on the SQ website and I have put our VA FF number on the booking. We are both Platinum.

Because of the changes to the VFF progamme we are seriuosly thinking of changing our alliance to SQ. These days we both fly about the same so family pooling won't come into the equation as much as it use to.

If we change the FF number on the booking to our SQ FF number can I still use my VA Platinum status to get us into the lounge at SYD? Simply by showing my card or does it have to appear on the boarding pass?

Alternatively (and possibly dishonest) can I change the FF number from VA to SQ once we get into the lounge? If I can do this will it change the onward flight from SIN-HKT as well. (we also want to get into the lounge at SIN)

TIA

Short answer - it's possible to have both SQ mileage accrual and VA status recognition at the same time if you get a good SQ check-in agent at the airport.

Long answer - it's complicated.

This link explains it quite well:

There was a deep-dive discussion on another website about earning VA miles on SQ flights while also enjoying free SQ in-flight wi-fi (which requires you to link your booking to an SQ KrisFlyer account).
  • When you purchase your flight or when you go to manage your booking, only the FQTV field (mileage accrual) is available for editing.
  • When you check in for your flight (3-48hrs before scheduled departure), the FQTS field (status benefits) then becomes available for you on the SQ website, however the SQ website currently only allows FQTS to be a SQ KF membership number.
If you wanted VA VFF mileage accrual then it's straight-forward by adding your VFF number into FQTV when managing your booking and then at online check-in you enter your SQ KF number to the FQTS field to get free in-flight wi-fi.

In your case, the situation is reversed and you want FQTV (mileage accrual) to be your SQ KF number and FQTS (status benefits) to be your VA VFF number which you won't be able to enter during online check-in. As per the Milelion link, your options are:
  1. Asking the check-in staff to enter one number for FQTV and another for FQTS
  2. Providing the frequent flyer number for status at the time of check-in to enjoy additional luggage, priority handling and lounge access, then changing it to the frequent flyer number for accrual at the lounge or at the gate
If your check-in agent can do Option 1 above, then you won't need to change FF numbers after check-in and your boarding pass should have the line of text at the bottom mentioning SilverKris/KrisFlyer Gold lounge access.

If your check-in agent cannot do Option 1 above, you could ask to speak to their colleagues/manager to help make it happen. If you get too much resistance or push-back at check-in, you can either:
  • take your chances with the staff at the lounge and hope/pray they have the knowledge on how to modify your FQTV/FQTS membership numbers on their systems; or
  • go with Option 2 above, only have your VA VFF on your boarding pass at check-in, then change it to SQ KF after your enter the SYD lounge. This isn't ideal since you also want lounge access at SIN so I'm not sure how things would go under this scenario and if you could pull off another VFF/KF switcheroo.

Thanks for that.... After thinking about it a bit more I think I will keep it at the VA number on the booking. Considering I have over 2 years to think about it. However, I will still ask the question at the checkout to see if they know about this as well as ask at the lounge. My next hurdle is to figure out how I am going to get my 2 grandchildren into the lounge as we are a party of 6 and can only guest in 2 extra people. Hopefully they will allow a 3 and 4 year old in. ;)
