-- V Pacific--

I have done a little bit of digging. VB Ventures Pty Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Virgin Blue. VB Ventures Pty Ltd's address is listed in the USPTO registration as Virgin Blue's old HQ address on Wickham St in Fortitude Valley. It doesn't have any revenue so I assume it is just a holding company for intellectual property. The V Pacific name and logos were registered almost a year before V Australia made its first flight. Something strange happened last year and the trademark was rejected from the register last year only to be re-registered a short time later. This is probably why the trademark has shown up as being recently registered in NZ.

This is unlikely to have anything to do with an impending name change and is more likely a combination of Virgin Blue preventing similar trademarks being used and keeping their options open.

The strange event was most likely the registration expiring and Virgin Blue being forced to re register it.

Whilst V Pacific is a strong name, I agree with an earlier post that the V Australia livery is awesome. IMHO all the 737's, 738's E70's and E90's should be in the same livery as the 773's

A registered trademark doesn't just expire. Surely even if a registration could expire VB would just pay the renewal fee (or whatever) and keep the trademark? What can happen is that if a trademark is registered but not used for 3 years, someone else can make an application to have it unregistered.

Further digging reveals that the trademark was opposed by Virgin Enterprises Limited. I'm not completely sure, but isn't Virgin Enterprises Limited the name of Sir Richard Branson's company? The one that actually owns the Virgin name and licenses it to the likes of Virgin Blue, Virgin Mobile etc. Why would they be opposing a V Pacific trademark? What's going on there?

Perhaps Branson is eyeing another addition to the family.

Virgin Atlantic, Virign America, Virgin Pacific. ;)

I want a Virgin Asia aswell! But doesn't Virgin part own D7?

Anyways, I am very confident the new name will be Virgin Pacific or Virgin Australia, no V's. With the logo similar to that of VS and new livery also adopting VS's new identity, but maybe a blue tail will look better than the red! ;)

DJ should have gone with the A320's, way better looking than those 737's, the Virgin livery on VX's aircraft look amazing.

Assuming there is a new name. I am not really convinced of the need to change it.

I have to agree with oz_mark here, assuming that there is a new name is just that, an assumption at this point in time

I mean why would an airline paint a brand new aircraft with the slogan 'Virgin Blue proudly flying the AFL' then have to strip it off a matter of weeks/days later when they change the name

In short, I don't think there is a new name at all, rebrand does not = name change but I'm more than happy for JB to surprise me when the announcement is made :p

I wonder if it is painted on, or is some sort of decal. Hmm.

Edited to add: Virgin have posted a sneak peek on their facebook page, note the different lettering on the "Vir" part of Virgin.
Virgin Blue's Photos - Wall Photos | Facebook

I think that's just their regular corporate font. Will probably say something along the lines of 'Virgin Blue: Official airline of the AFL'

There's another photo on the Sydney message board which shows the side lettering as
"Virgin Blue proudly flying the AFL".
and the rumour is that it actually returning to service today,is apparently doing the MEL-ADL run all day.

I guess that explains the white birds that have recently arrived from Boeing. Either that, or these are just interim's until the new livery 'goes live'.

I need to spend more time back on the YSSY board. It's where my flying habit began ;)

Quite an interesting day for DJ today, not only has VUY operated it's first flight in the AFL livery but VH-VOA which is the first of the 737's to come off lease departed Australia for Malaysia,VH-VOC will be the next one to go,sometime in March I believe.

photo of AFL aircraft

Here is the official portrait of the AFL aircraft. Can't seem to resize. Anyway, salient point is the tail is conspicuously blank! ;)

Heh, keeping us guessing in true Virgin style. Good on them.

Is there a reason there's only 10 club logos on the side? Or are the rest on the other side?
