VA and SQ Alliance Final Approval

I think it would be a fair assumption that Silk Air may eventually be part of the alliance.

I wish Qatar would join team up with Virgin, they are an underrated airline.

Could not agree with you more - I wish VA had chosen Qatar instead of Etihad to team up with - they seem like a much better fit (hindsight is a wonderful thing I guess!)

VA could then take on more planes to feed daily services into Doha from each capital city, Qatar can then very quickly shoot the passengers through to their various European destinations. I'm a huge fan of the VA 777 experience but will purposely not be flying them to AUH next year because I would then have to board Etihad Y onto LHR. A combo of VA 777 and QR would have been a great way to fly.

Why, they are not part of Star?

I'd tend to agree, not Star = not part of VA/SQ alliance. But, maybe, as a counterto the QF->3K joint marketing efforts to Australians there would be some logic into eventually including MI into the VA arrangement. There are a few destinations that 3K/VF compete with MI on (eg MES, KUL, HKT, PNH, REP, SUB, RGN, DRW, PEN)

It's a matter of public record that DJ and also VS are looking at Star and or others, however the assumption that Silk Air might join an alliance or partner with DJ because it's parent has is flawed on the basis that it is yet to have any such hookup with any airline. It may do code shares with DJ and SQ flight numbers but I suspect that will be the limit, having Silk Air into DRW is also going to help Tiger in the long run.

In my 'excitement' I didn't notice this. If it does not include SQ into Europe then it's a very half-hearted alliance and of little use to me as well.

Roll on Oneworld :(

Don't worry I missed this too!

Bummer. Thought this would actually have been a killer blow but it was landed off target and with 40% strength.

Meh from me but I'm sure some people will find some of those selected destinations useful and appealing. It is a bit confusing for your ordinary punter this limited partnership though... I think VA will find it annoying to manage that.

My dream would be for them to dump Etihad and the middle east and go the full hog with SQ! Providing of course SQ giving them proper access to award avails.

Will be interesting to see the avails..... Are they loaded yet?

Can you explain what you are on about here? AFAIK you get Points, SCs etc on any SQ flight or have i missed something?

The biggest problem with SQ is the lack of availability of rewards tickets. At least with EY there is plenty of availability, even of the cheapest rewards fares available.

What this tie up does do is help the people of Perth so much more. I can now get from PER-SIN-LHR-MIA and send all the miles and SC to VA.

Miami Beach I have missed you...... see you soon. :p

You are correct - the only thing is VA will not Codeshare on most flights to europe because their partner Etihad Airways already services this region.

You can earn points and status credits on all SQ flights (from the 20th of December).

So hence, you could fly to Europe on SQ and earn full points/SCs it just won't be a Virgin Australia codeshare.

They haven't said that reward seats will only be on codeshares so I think a few are jumping to conclusions.

To clarify:

- Points and SCs are earned on ALL SQ flights provided it is a valid booking class (some economy fare buckets are not valid for earn). There is nothing that limits earn only to SQ codeshares with VA.
- Codeshare flights with a VA flight number may have a higher points earn due to earn rates and Status Bonuses, but SC earn is the same.
- Codeshare flights are limited destinations, so it may mean if you want a single PNR to Europe it may limit you to the SQ code the whole way, thereby slightly reducing points earn, but not removing it altogether as some seem to think.
- Rewards have not yet been made available so we'll just have to wait and see if it includes more than just the codeshares, but I couldn't see why it wouldn't (VS awards are not codeshare and you can get to Europe with those, so why assume SQ would be different?)
- Their competition has rewards seats on non-codeshare flights with other airlines (CX, JL, BA, AA, etc) so they would be shooting themselves in the foot if they didn't offer this, but again, let's see what's available on the 20th when it all kicks off.

Big difference in redemption for ADL/BNE/PER and SYD/MEL tables:

9,501-15,000

75,000

175,000

250,000

Versus

9,501-15,000

90,000

300,000

400,000

Points Tables | Velocity Frequent Flyer

holy velocity points batman! that is a huge difference.

Has that got to do with the plane singapore airlines uses on MEL/SYD routes? I think if you want to fly on the A380 (which no longer flies to MELB) you need more reward points. But i might be wrong.

Having said that, so why do we need more points to fly out of Melbourne? we are only serviced by the 777 now. that's abit unfair.

Hmm i guess it depends on what plane they use out of Brisbane and Adelaide, it might mean I take a side trip lol well when you look at a difference of 125,000 points on certain routes, its worth flying 1 hour to ADEL or 1.45hr to BRIS to save those points.
