Bit sad this has closed down...
Though all others are still operating.

I'd be leaning toward Virgin wanting it gone. Nice letter from the legal team sent and case closed.

Kmart apparently did this recently, closed down multiple Instagram pages with hundreds of thousand of followers created by random people. They wanted to funnel people to their own site rather than to others.

Sounds more like it was a hosting cost issue.

I tend to whitelist sites that provide a valuable source of info and who don't bombard me with ads, but not everyone feels the same about ads.

The VA Source - Virgin Australia News & Information

6th July 2017 - Website Closure.
Please note that due to an unsustainable percentage of users of this website using Adblock software it is no longer viable to operate this website.

Thank you to everybody who has supported this site over the past seven years.

I would imagine Qantas and Jetstar would be next to go if frequent users who have adblocking software don't realise hosting isn't free!

Hosting is dirt cheap these days and I bet there are folks around who would gladly host for free. There are many ways to monetise a site like that so cash shouldn't be an issue.

Not really. Sure, dirt cheap if you aren't getting much traffic or just hosting static pages with minimal data transfers.

There's a heap of tools around to speed up, cache and do magic stuff these days. Scale up/down automagically depending on traffic load etc.

Closing down suggests there is a larger underlying issue than monetary cost of keeping it online. All other problems are manageable.

I'm well aware of these things. Doesn't mean its cheap though.

I'm not familiar with this particular website, but if you take what they've said at face value, it makes sense. If they aren't getting their revenue from advertising and they're not running a charity (ie people tend to what to get paid for the work they do), then it makes sense.

Agree it's a bit weird.
I'd have thought all the source sites would have been on the same server so it's only incremental traffic and a domain name.

Plus I can't imagine the traffic to the VA site is that different from JQ/QF.
I don't use the site too much but it serves a purpose and contains more info than say airfleets on the airlines it covers
