I hate this security check - I have no trouble anywhere else but at least twice have been mucked around here.
This time my compact umbrella which travels pretty much everywhere with me, both domestic and international in my carry on.
A problem anywhere else? Nope. Not VA at other ports, not QF in PER, nowhere that I can recall in recent years.
The guy mumbled the normal 'any aerosols laptops etc.' and because he mumbled its possible he said umbrella but I did not hear it - but wouldn't have been attuned because it is not normally an issue. So the lady had to retrieve the umbrella from the bottom of the bag (I could have got it out 10 times as quick, but no, she had to do it -'security' reasons i suppose)
And this after trying to check in at the kiosk which is probably still displaying the 'please wait while we are processing your request' message even now.
I do hope the niggles are out of the way and the flight to MEL is smooth! :)
Just as well it is AM otherwise the over zealous RSA in this lounge would probably get me too.

Just on a related topic as well. For consistency's sake could we please have all the Australian Domestic airport screening people get together and decide once and for all whether laptop computers/tablets/portable dvd players etc can remain inside the bags being scanned through the xray machine or separate in their own plastic trays. And then make up some signs at all airport security screening points saying what the deal is with these items, plus the umbrellas and various other tools that get allowed through some screening points but get confiscated at other airports?

Not sure if it's still the case, but at BNE, QF requests umbrellas to be put in the tray, while JQ and VA do not. Seems dumb having inconsistencies when they lead to the same secure area...

Are you saying you had to surrender your umbrella? If so, were you given a reason?

Sorry, wasn't clear, it was not confiscated, just had to be taken out and inspected. I'm not necessarily against that, just bemoaning the total lack of consistency between different airports/airlines (and especially targeting T3 at PER, they seem to give me all the grief I get).
I like, like most of us, to be totally prepared at security and not hold proceedings up. Seemingly random things like I describe throw a spanner in the works.

Umbrellas out is pretty standard

If you think T3 is bad try T2... ;)
