VA to become a partner of Air Canada

Does this mean Bain/VA2 is one step closer to becoming a member of....🤔
Well a few pieces in a seperate article made me take notice 😂

“Members will be able to bundle Star Alliance flights with Virgin Australia connections at the same redemption rate.”

“With this new partnership, you’ll be able to pair Star Alliance flights to Australia with Virgin Australia connections within the region as part of one itinerary, flying Air Canada or United Airlines from North America and connecting onward within Australia once you arrive.

United’s offering widespread business-class award space on its nonstop from Houston (IAH) to Sydney (SYD) at the moment, so you could book that flight through Aeroplan along with a connection to Melbourne (MEL) for 85,000 points, or add a Sydney stopover for just 5,000 more points.”

At last, VFF SC has been taken into consideration, unlike VA1 when only earn VFF points on AC flights was possible.
OT**Hopefully consideration will now proceed with the further agreement with NH (ANA).**End OT.

Still hasn’t been said on this thread yet I’m waiting with bated breath :p

Didn’t even read the article, supporting AFF’s stand against clicking on any link from that questionable blog site!

But on topic, any integration is good for Bain/VA2.

Not that I like Air Canada much, their international product is pretty second tier and service average but domestically they are handy although I would have thought WestJet was a better fit for VA2, I’ve been pleasantly surprised with WestJet travelling domestically in Canada.... now they could have taught VA1 how to run a successful regional arm!

I'd love to see VA join Star Alliance I just get the feeling that shackling themselves into a long tem, expensive partnership with international carriers during a time of severe uncertainty while also trying to cut costs and turn a profit isn't top of mind for Bain right now.

On the other hand, UA is still not interlining with VA. Any UA/VA itineraries are to be booked via Air Canada.

Vice-versa with VA, which still only offers interlines with AS/MX on top of the existing codeshares with AC/DL.

UA's Australian interline is still exclusive to the QF/JQ group per recent mock booking.

I'd be under the assumption that VA would have to renegotiate all of their old interline agreements with carriers considering they are a 'new' company now.

This was VA Mk 1's interline agreements prior to administration (Late 2018 - prior to the NH codeshare agreement). The listed carriers across all 3 global alliances plus the unaligned carriers.

Non-interline carriers on a multi-trip itinerary were required to claim bags and re-check in if not on the list.

Keep in mind, an interline agreement is just baggage/check-through transfer. No FF points or reciprocal lounge access/codeshare agreement out of a basic interline.

UA used to have a codeshare agreement with predecessor DJ, but this ended after Godfrey switched the USA partnership to DL and VX.

The basic interline baggage agreement with UA ended a few years later and has not been renewed when JB took over.

Possibly some changes, but they kept most of their interline agreements intact (and their re-accomodation agreements with Qantas and Jetstar for that matter)

What stood out was that you VA flights would count AC status. Does AC usually credit status on non Star partner flights? Maybe, just maybe, VA is heading somewhere.

Cathay Pacific iirc (a Oneworld member).

AC also has a FF/Codeshare partnership with Sri Lankan (a Oneworld member) along with a number of unaligned carriers such as Etihad.

Yes, but usually only redeemable miles and they don't count towards status.
