Oh dear…. Heard the family on radio this morning talking about what happened and what the staff member concerned said prior to the incident…

Virgin Australia staff tip disabled doctor out of wheelchair, triggering investigation.

Virgin Australia has launched an investigation after a prominent disabled doctor and former Queensland Australian of the Year was tipped out of his wheelchair by staff at Brisbane Airport.

The incident occurred as Dr Palipana, who is a former Queensland Australian of the Year, was boarding a flight to Melbourne with his mother and two carers to give a disability talk.

Dr Palipana’s mother, Chithrani, fumed at the airline on social media, claiming the wheelchair assistance staff member disregarded them, asked them not to interfere, and even suggested they board the plane before Dr Palipana.

Dr Palipana was then dropped from his wheelchair while taking a sharp corner.

The Courier Mail has contacted Virgin for comment.

Why was a ground staff pushing the wheelchair and not his carers?.

When Mrs QS arrives back in SYD with #tibia, she had the wheelchair assistance. But the wheelchair or the ground staff or both was not allowed or won't to go to the P7 carpark. The assistance ended at the glass doors🤷🏼.

Listen to the person in the chair or their carer or you need another job.

I think this is the pertinent point - on the news the family claim they were ignored (in fact, spoken down to) by the Virgin staff members when they asked them to stop.

I suspect this Virgin staff member(s) will be out of a job soon if not already.

They are extremely lucky the person was not seriously injured.

Great to see this thread finally getting some interest after three OPs :) and in this case, all the media reports and claims are believed up-front 🤣

Was just on ABC24: VA2 have come out and confirmed the incident, formally apologised and is ‘taking action’ against their team member…

I think unfortunately for Virgin and their staff is that this Dr was so high profile which has helped with all the media coverage.

Just reread one of the OPs linked stories (edit: news.com.au). Comment by the complaint family member.
“However, I do think it was an isolated incident where the ground staff member kind of took things into their own hands.

“Virgin historically has been excellent, and a lot of people with disabilities prefer to fly with them. They proactively called me to apologise and said they were investigating the matter.”

Puts a bit of a different perspective on the issue than the extracts that were provided in the OPs. VA proactive, apologising from the start and indeed a preferred carrier for the disabled for many!! 😊

I know… I actually remember him being a big contributor in the Covid days up here.

I think his media profile has definitely contributed to the high level of media coverage v another person in the same situation.
