I recently had to cancel a Red e deal return and got a $460 voucher in my email with reference number.

When I went to use it, tele sales would only accept 161.00 of it (+tax) for some reason that a lawyer himself wouldn't really understand.

Apparently the vouchers don't actually show the value of what you are allowed to use but rather the value of the original booking. It seems as if the passenger is supposed to be able to guess what the actual value of their voucher is rather than rely on what's printed on the actual email under the "voucher value" heading.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Have I stumbled into an alternative universe of stupidity?

After getting no where via email, calling them and complaining on social networking, I actually pointed out to an unfriendly 131313 rep that a voucher for $460 that isn't worth $460 is akin to Myer or Woolworths giving me a $100 gift card and then at check out saying "oh, sorry it's not actually worth $100 you can only use $20.00 of it... To which I was told my original booking "looked very odd and I am lucky it was credited at all..."

WTF?

Any advice?

The amount of the voucher is the value of the original booking.

When you go to use it, the change fees along with a telephone booking fee will also be taken out therefore reducing the amount you have to spend.

You should be able to redeem it online if you don't want to pay the telephone fee.

QF are going to get themselves in trouble with these vouchers. The conditions are brutal sometimes. You have to -

1. Spend at least the amount of the voucher. You cannot give QF any fare difference. This is just pure greed on QF's part.
2. The new base fare has to exceed the old base fare. You cannot use the tax component of the old fare as part of the new base fare.
3. The voucher value excludes the compulsory fees and charges that may be applicable to change the fare.

Count your blessings!

When red e--deals were first introduced, no changes or partial reuse of value was allowed at all.

Use it as booked or lose it!

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

Please don't take this the wrong way, without wanting to state the obvious.
But I realise that the voucher says $460... do you recall if this was infact the amount you paid?

Without knowing the answer, It appears like this might have been the value of the whole return ticket?? Perhaps the one-way unused segment was ~$230 (before tax was removed?)

I am not going to be of much help but you really need to be careful when dealing with re-bookings, cancellations etc.

I found out the hard way when I was in hospital a couple of years ago. First off I brought the first leg (domestic leg and part of an international itinerary) forward to a few days earlier and the ticket was repriced and I paid a change fee but she waived the assisted booking fee as I was in hospital at the time.

I then had to cancel the booking as I was still sick and eventually re-booked for a month or so later. I had to also change part of another booking and all up I think the change fees and re-pricing of the airfares cost me ~$500.

So much for cheap airfares. They are OK if they can be used but almost useless if they cannot be used....
